Brendan Gaughan has been a success in off-road racing as well as being the Winston West Series Champion the past two years. Moving to the Craftsman Truck Series in 2002, there's no reason he should slow down.
After eight events he currently leads the Raybestos Rookie of the Year chase by 26 points and scored his first career CTS win at Texas. So far, the season has been a good one for Gaughan and his No. 62 Dodge team. Aside from leading the rookie points, he is 10th in overall driver points.
"We feel really comfortable with that 26-point lead for the Raybestos rookie program. That is one of our goals this year, to win the Raybestos Rookie of the Year. Our other goal is to try and get up there and compete for the championship."
"We're here to try to win races. We're here to try to compete for the championship, and there still a lot of races left to go. We think we can get up there and try to compete for it."
As with any driver looking for a chance to grab at the brass ring, Gaughan would someday like to see himself in Cup, but there is a catch, he won't go it alone.
"I'd like to go to Winston Cup from the Craftsman Truck Series, if at all possible. I'm pretty set in a lot of ways, and I have guys on my race team that have taken care of me since I was 15 years old. I'm maybe loyal to a fault to some of these guys. If somebody wants me to come drive for them and move to Charlotte or something like that, they better be prepared to bring a crew chief and a defabricator and a couple of guys with me. These guys have taken care of me, and I don't believe that you just dump guys that have gotten you where you are going."
"If I do go to Winston Cup I would love it to do it with this team. If it meant having us move the team to the Charlotte area, if NAPA Auto Parts would like us to do that, or if another sponsor would like us to do that, I would sure love to do it with these guys."
