SPECIAL WINSTON MEMORIES

"There are so many things that went on throughout the years. I guess I'd have to say that '86 was a pretty good one. I won it that year. I've sat on the pole umpteen times. It's been a good qualifying event for me. I do remember that Earnhardt and I got into it in '87. The caution flag came out and I think he was on the outside and I was on the pole. We got to beatin' and bangin' and I got pretty mad because he took me out. I ran into him after the race. I was mad. He cost me the win. What would you do?"

KEYS TO WINNING THE WINSTON

"The competition has changed a good bit. Everyone's more competitive. The guy who wins the Winston Open usually does well. He can usually come in and run real well. He just has an advantage because he's coming in one leg up on you. He's had the luxury of running more than you."

CHANGES TO THE WINSTON

"I don't know what I'd do to change it. I know they only did it once, but I think it might be kind of neat to do it at another points race. We raced it in Atlanta once. It might be kind of fun to do it at another track-mix it up a bit."

* This will be Elliott's 17th start in The Winston. He has one win, six top-fives and 12 top-10s in the race's history. Elliott is tied with Terry Labonte for the most Winston starts among active drivers (16). He has an average finish of 7.88 in the "All-Star Event."

* Elliott has earned the most Winston pole positions (four) of any driver in NASCAR history. His most recent Winston pole came in 2000; others were earned in 1998, '97 and '87.
