Tony Furr, crew chief for Pepsi 400 winner John Andretti, was fined $50,000 before that race when NASCAR inspectors found an illegal carburetor mounting. During a routine inspection before the race at Daytona International Speedway, inspectors found carburetor mounting studs designed to move. NASCAR rules dictate that carburetor mountings must remain fixed. New mounting studs were installed before last Saturday's race and Andretti went on to win his first-ever Winston Cup race. Rich Bichle's car # for the Brickyard is #26, not #27 as reported previously.

Robert Yates Statement (partial)

``I didn't come to this conclusion overnight,'' Yates said in a statement. ``I've worried and wrestled with it for more than a year and it's not a simple, one-answer deal. Attempting to explain it would take longer than it took to make the decision itself. And, if you hadn't lived it, you still wouldn't understand,'' Yates said in describing his sometimes prickly relationship with Irvan. A representative for Yates said the statement would be the owner's only comment. (Charlotte.com)

One name that sources say has come up as a possible replacement for Irvan is Kenny Irwin Jr., who is now driving on the NASCAR truck series. Irvan's name, meanwhile, figures to come up in connection with virtually every driver vacancy the rest of the season. Broadcast reports Tuesday, for instance, mentioned him as a possible candidate for the new Joe Washington-Julius Irving Winston Cup team. ``We have not talked to him,'' said Kathy Thompson, spokesperson for Washington-Irving Racing. (Charlotte.com)

Rumors of replacements in the #28 for Ernie Irvan include Kenny Irwin. Jr., Johnny Benson, Jr., Ward Burton, Sterling Marlin and Bobby Hamilton (Jayski).

Rumors of where Ernie Irvan may go include a second Diamond Ridge team(#29), Dale Earnhardt's #14 Burger King car, and a return to the #4 (Jayski).

Jimmy Foster of Ormond Beach, Fla., driver of the No. 11 Speedvision/Outdoor Life Ford and a candidate for Raybestos Rookie of the Year in the NASCAR Busch Series, Grand National Division, has left Key Motorsports to pursue other NASCAR driving opportunities. The announcement was made jointly by Foster and team owner Curtis Key in a news release. (NASCAR Online)

Talladega Superspeedway officials have signed Husqvarna as the official power equipment of the 2.66-mile track. (NASCAR Online)

RPM2Nite announced that Morgan-McClure may start a second team in 1998 and has sponsorship possibilities and mentioned the rumors of Marlin possibly leaving (Jayski).

A good source confirms that Andy Petree and is definitely going to run a 2nd team next year, but had no other news(doesn't Ken Schrader have some #52 Pontiacs in his shop?) (Jayski).

Another rumor has Todd Bodine to SABCO but what about the three year Pontiac deal announced during the BGN race at Milwaukee? (Jayski)

As for Redline Oil and Rusty Wallace: Redline is a long-time manufacturer of high-quality synthetic oil and driveling lubricants. They're more associated with "sporty car" racers, but they have a solid reputation in other racing series. Larry Wallace may have indeed specified its use in his engines; I'd guess that he's found he can use a lighter viscosity synthetic oil and "free" some horsepower. Typically, synthetic lubricants are also used in the trans and differential for qualifying because of this(thanks Glenn and Jayski).

The Indianapolis Motor Speedway has put down 18 inches of asphalt in the turns at a different angle than the track to prevent the cars from running too low in the corners and the grass like they did in 1996(per RPM2Nite/Jayski).

ARCA driver Perry Tripp will run the BGN race at the Gateway International Speedway in St. Louis in the #66 Radius Ford and make his and his teams debut attempt (Jayski).

Jayski hears rumors that Pennzoil may leave the #30 Pontiac team or WC all together.
