First of all, I want to thank all 232 of you who responded to the poll. I'm sure I'll get a few more stragglers this morning and today, but for the sake of letting you know the results, these will be the final numbers.
Based on my last known number of subscribers, about 2600, we had nearly a 9% response rate, not too bad. Some of you found it very hard to meet my 20 word limit, though <grin>.
179.5 - Yes, he should have let him by. Most respondents stated that this was what teamwork is all about. 52.5 - No, he should not have let him by. A lot of respondents stated that they wished NASCAR would get away from "tag-team racing"
(the .5 on each is from one respondent who waffled between being a Mark Martin fan, and wanting him to do well, and being a fan of good hard racing, which this person (and a lot of you "no" voters) felt was not visible when Jeff let Mark by. On most responses it was pretty easy to tell which way the vote went.)
So, we have 77.4% in favor of Jeff letting Mark by, and 22.6% against Jeff letting Mark by.

AP reports that Bill Elliott had the fastest lap in practice at Darlington, in preparation for the Southern 500. Elliott turned a lap of 166.698. Bill's last victory was at the 1994 Southern 500.
Ted Musgrave keeps inching closer to his first NASCAR Winston Cup win, and Sunday's third place at Michigan was one of his best bids of the season. But he's under no illusions about Saturday night's race at Bristol, where there were 20 crashes in the spring race. ''I think we all need a lot of luck at Bristol. I've always done well at Bristol, but I usually get caught up in a wreck or some misfortune and I can't show my stuff at the end of the race. ''You can come into that race and say, 'OK, guys, here's what I'm going to do: I'm going to find a spot where nobody else is, and run my pace and take it easy.' But you can't do that at Bristol because it's a one-groove race track and there are 36 or 38 cars out there, lined up all the way around the track. ''So Bristol is just a place where you have to put your nose to the grindstone and hang on every single lap, drive as hard as you can every single lap, and let the chips fall where they may. And still you can have the best equipment and still get caught up in something and have a bad day. ''I look at it like going to the dentist: You know you're going to get a shot in the mouth, so just go ahead and give it to me real quick and get it over with.'' Thus, Darlington's Southern 500, at the track where Musgrave nearly won in April, is the most logical place for Musgrave to make his long-awaited breakthrough. Deere and Company today announced the signing of a multi-year agreement with Roush Racing to sponsor a NASCAR Winston Cup Series team. Roush Racing, of Livonia, Mich., has acquired an interest in the team owned by Mark Rypien Motorsports (MRM). The agreement means that John Deere sponsorship will remain with the No. 97 race car and driver Chad Little for the 1998 NASCAR season and beyond. "In the marketplace, Deere has a reputation for pursuing perfection," said Bill Becker, Deere's Manager, Event Marketing -- Motorsports. "By aligning ourselves with Jack Roush, we've taken a big stride in that direction with our racing program." The team will continue to be operated from its newly built headquarters in Mooresville, N.C., and Roush plans to continue to race the Pontiac Grand Prix for the remainder of the 1997 season. "John Deere is a world-class organization," said Roush Racing owner Jack Roush, "and we're extremely pleased that we have been selected to help fulfill their sponsorship objectives. Our mission for John Deere, as it is with everything we pursue, is to provide them a world-class racing program." Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed, and the Roush organization will take over operation of the team immediately. Former MRM team owner Greg Pollex will remain with the team as a shareholder. Roush Racing also fields NASCAR Winston Cup teams with drivers Ted Musgrave, Jeff Burton and Mark Martin, winner of last weekend's Winston Cup race at Michigan Speedway. Roush's teams account for five wins so far this year, and all three drivers are in the top eight in season points standings. This season marks Deere's second year in NASCAR competition. The company joined the sport for the 1996 season as sponsor of Little and the MRM NASCAR Busch Series, Grand National Division, entry. In 1997, MRM and Deere made the jump to Winston Cup competition. NASCAR officials notified NASCAR Winston Cup Series teams this week of proposed modifications regarding engines and frames to be made to the series' rule book for the 1998 season. The most notable changes include, but are not limited to the following:
Maximum allowable compression limit permitted on any cylinder will be 12.0 to 1 on all engines in the NASCAR Winston Cup Series. Current rules allow 14.0 to 1 compression ratios.
Approval of the SB2 cylinder head for General Motors engines.
A NASCAR Winston Cup type frame must consist of a front and rear subframe connected to the main frame on which the roll cage is welded. No offset subframes will be permitted.

On Monday morning, NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series Cintas Rookie of the Year point leader Kenny Irwin stood alongside famed car owner and engine builder Robert Yates in Richmond International Raceway's NASCAR Winston Cup Series garage area. On either side of the pair was a black Ford Thunderbird, emblazoned with a large, red "Lone Star" emblem on its hood and carrying the No. 28 on its doors and roof. Irwin, who will drive the No. 28 for Yates in 1998 when he makes a run for NASCAR Winston Cup Rookie of the Year, is at Richmond to test the pair of NASCAR Winston Cup Series cars and practice pit stops for the Sept. 6 Exide NASCAR Select Batteries 400. However, appearances, and the presence of Yates aside, he was operating under the direction of Shorty Edwards of David Blair Motorsports, which owns the cars and will run Irwin in as many as five NASCAR Winston Cup Series races this fall. According to Blair Motorsports spokesman Shorty Edwards, the two black Fords at Richmond would've carried Blair's No. 27 if the team had had time to change them. Edwards, who spent many years with legendary car owner Junior Johnson, noted that the Blair team had just taken delivery of the cars and hadn't had time to remove the paint jobs, logos or numbers on the former Robert Yates Racing vehicles. Yates is on hand, said Edwards, strictly as a consultant, assisting with pit stop practice and keeping an eye on the Blair team's motors, which Yates will supply this fall. Irwin will be busy at Richmond, as he'll also compete in the Sept. 4 Virginia is for Lovers 200 NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series race. Irwin planned to test Tuesday along with NASCAR Busch Series Grand National Division drivers Kevin and Wayne Grubb and Scott Lagasse, who are preparing for the Sept. 5 Autolite Platinum 250. Nineteen NASCAR Busch Series entries flooded into RIR Monday, including paperwork from NASCAR Winston Cup drivers Mark Martin (Sunday's DeVilbiss 400 winner at Michigan), 1996 champ Terry Labonte and brother Bobby Labonte and 1996 "Winston Million" candidate Dale Jarrett. The Autolite Platinum 250 is thus already assured of being a "Showdown at Sundown!" as billed.
Apparently NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series competitor Mike Bliss of Milwaukie, Ore., will attempt to qualify a Jim Smith-owned NASCAR Winston Cup Series car at Richmond for the Exide 400, in addition to his truck duties. Jack Sprague has cancelled similar Richmond "dual" plans to concentrate on maintaining his lead in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series standings. The first entry for Richmond's three-race weekend was received for the Sept. 5 Autolite Platinum 250 from veteran NASCAR Winston Racing Series driver Eddie Johnson from Ashland, Va., who'll reunite with longtime car owner Coleman Rice in NASCAR Busch Series car No. 73.
