MARK MARTIN QUICKEST IN HOMESTEAD TESTING

HOMESTEAD, Fla. (Oct. 7, 1998) - Jeff Gordon and Mark Martin took a break in their battle for the NASCAR Winston Cup championship, testing at the Miami-Dade Homestead Motorsports Complex to get a head start on the competition in preparation for the Nov. 14, 1999 Jiffy Lube Miami 400.

Martin, who trails Gordon by 174 points with only five races remaining in the 1998 season, ran a lap of 36.29 seconds (148.80 mph), less than one-tenth better than Gordon's best lap of 36.37 seconds (148.47 mph). Both drivers walked away from the test smiling.

"I think the track's great," said Martin. "I thought it was good last year for the Busch race, and I'm even more pleased right now. Goodyear's chosen a real good tire, and the car seems to work extremely well. We just had a good day testing."

Gordon, who visited Homestead for the first time in early September to help announce the newest event on the NASCAR Winston Cup schedule, had his first opportunity to drive on the 1.5-mile oval. He liked what he found.

"The race track is very nice, and the place is awesome!" Gordon said after testing Tuesday and Wednesday. "The track is much smoother than we anticipated. We anticipated the seams in the turns to give us trouble, but the car was very nice over it.

"There's a lot of potential to race here," Gordon added. "I think we'll be able to go side by side and do some racing."

Tickets for the inaugural Jiffy Lube Miami 400 are being offered to customers who purchase advance tickets to any 1998 event at the speedway, including the Nov. 15 Jiffy Lube Miami 300. Remaining tickets for the inaugural 1999 event will go on sale to the public on Dec. 1, 1998.
