WATKINS GLEN, N.Y. (August 14, 2000) -- Throughout Friday and Saturday rain showers moved into the Watkins Glen area, leaving little practice time and the cancellation of qualifying. Sadler and the CITGO Ford started from the 32nd starting spot, after NASCAR lined the first 35 teams by the owner point standings. Sadler advanced from his starting position to finish the race in 28th.
After the green flag dropped, the first caution of the day came when Dale Earnhardt made contact with the outside wall exiting the Inner Loop. Sadler steered clear of the accident and advanced the CITGO Ford five positions. Shortly after the restart Sadler informed the crew of a severe vibration in fourth gear. Crew chief Mike Beam believes the vibration resulted from a driveshaft problem. The Wood Brothers crew will assess the problem in detail once the car has returned to the shop.
"The weather kept us guessing this weekend and this is a track where we run rain or shine. We felt great about our chances at a good starting spot after posting the 12th fastest time in practice. Unfortunately Mother Nature didn't cooperate and NASCAR had to cancel qualifying. We definitely didn't want to qualify on rain tires since most of us have very little experience at that."
"I felt like we had a good car going into the race but shortly after it started I felt a bad vibration in high gear. We believe something went wrong with the driveshaft. This was a very frustrating day because I was very happy with the car in Happy Hour. I think we have a good car for Michigan so we'll go get em’ next weekend."
