American Le Mans Series GTS class points leader looking for first Winston Cup win
DETROIT (August 7, 2003) -- When Ron Fellows, the driver of the No. 3 Compuware Corvette in the American Le Mans series, trades his sports car for the No. 1 Pennzoil Chevrolet for the Sirius at the Glen this weekend, a few things will be different -- the car, the competition, the crowd. But what won't change is the technological knowledge and preparation he brings to every race.
Fellows' ALMS sponsor, Compuware, is a leader in software applications and technical services, which makes it a perfect fit for the Toronto driver who says he's always enjoyed testing and technological development.
"Technical knowledge is critical to success of the Compuware Corvette on the track," said Fellows. "I worked on the testing for the Trans Am and really got to like it. Once you develop a feel for the car, you can develop a feel for how to make it go faster. But you have to translate this to the team. That's where data acquisition and analysis play a role. It's a great tool for collecting information and can really accelerate the learning."
Fellows has already shared that technical knowledge with his DEI teammates, and, when he straps into the No. 1 Pennzoil Chevrolet on Sunday, he is ready for a day of fun.
"Driving in Winston Cup is fun, and so is the competition," said Fellows. "A Winston Cup car requires more finesse than the Compuware Corvette. The Corvette is lighter and has more downforce, but these cars are fun to drive."
Fellows has already been to victory lane twice this year with teammate Johnny O'Connell in the No. 3 Compuware Corvette, and hopes to top his career-best Winston Cup finish of second at Watkins Glen in 1999 with trip to the winners' circle on Sunday.
