Watkins Glen: Jeremy Mayfield preview

RACING AT ROAD COURSES

"I feel like I'm getting the hang of road course racing. It's definitely different for me. I can't say that I look forward to these races, but after Sonoma especially, I think I'm getting a little more comfortable at them. It was pretty cool to walk away with a top-10 finish there. We worked hard to get it, and I think that just shows you what this team is capable of doing."

RUNNING WELL AT THE GLEN

"I'll tell you what. We had a nice finish here last year. We led some laps and that was big, especially at a place like that. I think I finished third the year before, so I know how to get around there. It's just not my favorite kind of track. Who knows, I may start to change my mind if we keep getting good finishes at these places. This team needs it. I feel like we've had some good runs and now we've run into a little bit of bad luck. That's the way this sport is though. This team has what it takes, and we'll be back to finishing like we were a few weeks ago."

RACE NOTES

Jeremy Mayfield is scheduled to drive chassis No. 26 which he drove to a 10th-place finish at Sonoma in June.

STATS & FACTS

CAREER AT WATKINS GLEN

This weekend's race marks Mayfield's 295th career start in the NASCAR Winston Cup Series and eighth career visit to Watkins Glen Int'l. Mayfield has one top-five and one top-10 finish at the racetrack. He has led one Watkins Glen race for a total of 9 laps. Mayfield's best finish at Watkins Glen is third place, which he earned in the 2001 Global Crossing at the Glen, starting from the 39th starting position. Mayfield's best start was from the ninth position in the 1995 Bud at the Glen.

MOST RECENT RUN AT WATKINS GLEN

Mayfield drove his UAW/Dodge Dealers Dodge Intrepid from the 30th spot into a top-15 finish in last year's Sirius Satellite Radio
The Glen. The Dew Crew kept Mayfield from losing track position, but an early pit stop left Mayfield in the lead spot on lap 30 after the leaders were forced to come in for service. Mayfield earned five bonus points and held on to first place until lap 38. He continued to battle for position and was making progress throughout the latter stages of the race but was slowed by the several late race cautions. He finished in 15th place.

LAST WEEKEND AT INDIANAPOLIS

Mayfield started last weekend's Brickyard 400 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway in the 10th position, but his No. 19 Dodge fell victim to mechanical problems almost immediately after the race started. Within the first five laps, Mayfield had fallen back to 31st, and by lap 62 the Dew Crew was forced to bring the No. 19 Dodge back to the garage to replace a gear. Mayfield continued to fight before two more visits to the garage put him 38 laps down as he finished the race running in 41st place.

WINSTON CUP POINTS RACE

Mayfield is currently 30th in the Winston Cup points standings, just 12 points out of the next position.

TALLADEGA POLE POSITION

Mayfield earned his seventh career pole position, and his first for Evernham Motorsports, in this year's Aaron's 499 at Talladega Superspeedway. The pole was Mayfield's third at Talladega, and makes him one of only three active drivers who have scored three or more poles at the track (Sterling Marlin - three, Bill Elliott - eight). The pole was Mayfield's first since starting up front in the Pop Secret 400 at North Carolina Speedway in October 2000. All seven of Mayfield's Bud Poles have been earned on superspeedways (Talladega, Darlington, Dover, Rockingham, and Texas).

WINSTON CUP CAREER RECORD

Coming into the 2003 Sirius Satellite Radio at The Glen at Watkins Glen Int'l, Mayfield has made 294 starts, with seven poles (three at Talladega and one at Darlington, Dover, Rockingham, and Texas), three wins (two at Pocono, and one at California), 35 top-fives and 66 top-10s. His most recent win came at Pocono in June of 2000. He earned his most recent pole, and his first pole for Evernham Motorsports at the Aaron's 499 at Talladega on April 6th.
