Jarrett Discusses Racing at Watkins Glen International
What do you think about racing at Watkins Glen?
"I really enjoy racing at Watkins Glen. It's a challenging and fun track. Of all the road courses out there Watkins Glen is more conducive to our type of cars. It has always allowed us to race hard and pass. I've always thought that maybe we should look at adding road courses to our schedule for the simple reason that they make us better prepared and give us a better opportunity to do well at those types of races throughout the year. The road courses bring out all of a drivers' ability. I've had good days and really bad days at Watkins Glen. If you're going to be successful at Watkins Glen, you pretty much have to drive 90 laps out of control. At this place, with so many turns, it just magnifies anything that might be wrong with your car. So you have to be right on with the setup because otherwise you're losing ground on the field at every single turn. You have to have the car working well and then you have to go out there and drive your guts out."
What kind of strategy do you have going into this weekend?
"Qualifying is so important and it didn't always used to be that way. We used to be able to use different strategies, but that's not really the case anymore. You know how far you can make it on fuel and you pretty much want to get in as soon as you get in that window to where you can make it the rest of the way. But it is important to get a good start because the competition is just so close. Watkins Glen is a lot of fun and it changes our whole way of thinking around. It's definitely a different challenge than we get with the ovals. We know going into the race we want a lot more stopping power so I can charge the corners extremely hard. Obviously the balance on the car is way different than it is at the ovals. So there are a lot of differences and our strategy prior to the race and then in the race itself changes quite a bit from how we normally approach things."
