Phoenix Racing and Bobby Labonte Finish 35th at Watkins Glen
Watkins Glen, N.Y. (August 8, 2010) - Bobby Labonte and the No. 09 Phoenix Construction Chevrolet team salvaged a 35th-place finish during Sunday's Heluva Good! Sour Cream Dips at The Glen after being forced to replace the batteries on the car behind the wall and on pit road. The team also had to replace an alternator and ignition box.
Starting the race in 29th position, problems with the cars power came near Lap 18. Prior to that Labonte and the team were looking to have a strong run. The first 15 laps of the race were going well, with Labonte moving up to the 26th spot and still moving forward. But, on Lap 18, Labonte switched over to a backup battery when he felt something was going wrong and the current battery voltage reading only 11 volts. Labonte and the crew attempted several times to get both the primary and backup batteries to charge.
The best opportunity came when the first caution came out at Lap 27. Labonte came down pit road so the crew could change both batteries. Restarting the race on Lap 30, Labonte had dropped back to 37th position due to time on pit road. Although the car was still running competitive lap times, the battery problems continued.
Labonte was sent spinning on Lap 41 to bring out the second caution of the race. He came down pit road again for the crew to change out the battery, four tires, fuel and an air pressure adjustment in the left rear. Unfortunately the car needed to be brought behind the wall on Lap 47 to change both batteries and the alternator.
The Phoenix Construction Chevrolet continued to swap out batteries and switch ignition boxes back and forth for the remainder of the race as the voltage continued to decrease. They lost laps on the track leaving the team to finish 35th.
"We can't catch a break," Labonte said after the race. "This team really deserves a great finish. We really thought that we were going to have a good run this weekend, but it just didn't happen that way. The team worked so hard today changing those batteries back and forth. This is really disappointing and not what anyone wanted for this Phoenix Racing team."
Bobby Labonte will look forward to next weekend when the series travels to Michigan International Speedway for the Carfax 400. He will be back with TRG Motorsports in the No. 71 TaxSlayer.com Chevrolet.
