A recent turn of events indicates that Robby Gordon will NOT race in Sunday's race.
As I previsouly mentioned, Robby had qualified the #14 Racing For Kids Chevy owned by Teresa Earnhardt in 13th place on the grid for the UAW-GM Quality 500 race at Charlotte
Then, during practice a day later, he ran into some oil that reportedly was put down by the #22 car, which caused him to spin and hit the turn 2 wall. That sent Felix Sabates scrambling for a backup car. becuase the Earnhardt's only had one car ready to race.
Felix struck a deal with Joe Nemechek, who failed to qualify his #87 Burger King car for the race. The crew began to convert the 87 car to the 14 car for the race. They apparently just sprayed orange spray paint over the 87 and duct taped the #14 over the spot on the door.
Robby Gordon took the renumbered Nemechek car out on the track, but found out that it was not set up like the original #14 was. The team tried to change shocks and springs, but the two cars were based on two different chassis designs. Gordon was still unhappy with the way in which the car felt, so he decided to abandon any effort to run in the race on Sunday.
Sabates & Gordon went to NASCAR to ask them if Nemechek could take over as driver of the new #14 car, that was previously the #87 car, which had originally failed to qualify for the race. NASCAR approved. Gordon was out, and Nemechek was in, starting in the last position - 43rd on the starting grid.
Teresa Earnhardt will get the owner points credited to her for the #14 car, and Joe Nemechek will get the driver points credited to him for starting the #14 car.
Gordon will try again at Rockingham in a SABCO car sponsored by First Union. Sounds like the #40 car to me.....but I'm so confused after writing this, can't be sure.....
