Stewart, 45, was hospitalized on Sunday with while driving an all-terrain vehicle, a non-racing related injury. Last Saturday night, he was present at the Barrett-Jackson auction in Scottsdale, Arizona and was interviewed on Velocity TV.

In the SHR statement, the team said: "Tony Stewart, driver of the No. 14 Chevrolet for Stewart-Haas Racing in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, sustained a back injury in a non-racing related accident Sunday afternoon.

"Stewart was transported to a local hospital following the accident and is currently being evaluated. Stewart is awake and alert, and able to move all extremities."

The team ended the release by saying that they will not officially update Stewart's condition until Thursday when they expect more information to be known.
