Stewart returns to USAC Midgets at Granite City June 4.

NASCAR Winston Cup Champion Tony Stewart returns to his USAC Midget Car roots on Wednesday night, June 4 as the USAC National Midget Car Series revisits Tri-City Speedway in Granite City, Ill. The race is the first of two slated for the series at the 1/2-mile dirt track located just across the Mississippi River from St. Louis, Mo. The USAC Midget Cars return there on August 30 for the "Bob Wente Classic."

Stewart, the only driver to win races in nine different USAC racing series, will be making only his second USAC appearance at Tri-City. In 1995 he won a 30-lap Sprint Car race there on his way to the USAC "Triple Crown" Championship.

Stewart has made an even 100 USAC National Midget Car starts but his recent success has been phenomenal. In his last 41 starts (dating back to 1995) he has recorded 18 wins, eight seconds and three thirds, missing the podium only 12 times! His last USAC Midget start resulted in a victory at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway "Bullring" in November but his last dirt-track USAC Midget start resulted in a 17th-place finish at the 16th Street Speedway in Indianapolis in 1998.

USAC has conducted 73 events in the St. Louis area, J.J. Yeley winning the "Bob Wente Classic" Midget race last August at Tri-City. Other USAC Midget winners at the Granite City facility have been Danny Frye (1961), Billy Mehner and Don Meacham (1966), Bob Tattersall (1966 and 2 in 1968), Mel Kenyon (1967, 1969 and 1985), Bob Wente (1969), Les Scott (1969), Larry Rice and Jimmy Caruthers (1970), Merle Bettenhausen (1971), Pancho Carter (1972), Russ Gamester (1990), Jeff Gordon (2 in 1990) and Jack Hewitt (1991).
