NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series
After spending two weeks in Daytona for Speedweeks and then a cross-country trip to California, the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series is taking this weekend off as the NASCAR Busch Series takes center stage in Mexico City. Ford Racing asked some of its drivers what they thought of having a free weekend this early in the season.
DALE JARRETT - No. 88 UPS Taurus
"You'll take any weekend off you can get. To me, in a world of trying to make things good for everybody, it would have been to have the week off after Daytona - to let everybody kind of regroup and let the winners enjoy their spoils of victory and everybody else regroup. Let the truck drivers get everything done since you've been away for almost two weeks at Daytona, but that's fine. Again, we'll take it whenever we can get it."
LAS VEGAS IS THE FOLLOWING WEEK AND THAT'S ALWAYS FUN. "We had a good test there, so I'm looking forward to going there for that. I always enjoy going to Vegas and having a little bit of fun, along with racing and having fun on the race track."
MATT KENSETH - No. 17 DeWalt Taurus
"I never want to give up an off weekend, but I'd rather put it in the bank and use it in September or October when everybody is getting tired and wore down and you've got twenty-some-odd weeks in a row. Having the third weekend off of the year is kind of strange. I wish it was shuffled a different way where we could have the time off later in the year, but we don't. You'll always take an off weekend because the season ends up getting long."
KURT BUSCH - No. 97 IRWIN/Sharpie Taurus
VEGAS IS COMING UP. YOUR THOUGHTS. "Vegas is great. It's a place where it almost deserves two dates just because everybody has so much fun outside the race track. But for us it's been a good track in the past. We finished ninth there last year and we hope to do better than that this year. It's just a matter of getting that balance through the whole run. That place makes the car very tight at the end."
DO YOU LIKE HAVING AN OFF WEEKEND THIS EARLY IN THE SEASON? "Not really. It's a tough way the schedule is laid out and with Easter being so early this year, that's what dictated our week off after Atlanta. It's just an odd balance. Right now, NASCAR is going through a bunch of changes and we're trying to make the sport better and more appealing to benefit most everybody involved. Hopefully, the way the other off weekends will shake out in years to come will be better."
