Riggs Ready For First Trip To All-Star Event

CONCORD, N.C. (May 18, 2004) - Scott Riggs will head to Lowe's Motor Speedway this weekend to pilot the No. 10 Valvoline Chevrolet in the NEXTEL Open, vying for one of the remaining spots in the main feature -- the non-points NASCAR NEXTEL All-Star Challenge.

Saturday night's NASCAR NEXTEL All-Star Challenge is mainly for race winners from the previous and current seasons. However, it will also include the winner of the NEXTEL Open, a preliminary race for teams that have not qualified for the premiere event.

"The all-star weekend is one of the most anticipated times of the season," said Riggs. "The competition is fierce - everyone that's in the race is there because they earned it. As a rookie, my only opportunity to take the Valvoline Chevy to the All-Star Challenge is to win the Open event."

In addition to the NEXTEL Open winner, one other driver will be voted into the race field by fans, who will cast their votes via cell phone, internet or at Lowe's Motor Speedway during the race weekend.

"I think Nextel is doing a wonderful job getting the fans involved this year," offered Riggs. "The addition of the voting is really going to build some curiosity and some extra interest in the event."

Lowe's Motor Speedway will be home to NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series teams the next two weeks. The Coca-Cola 600, another highly anticipated-event, will take place the weekend after the all-star races (May 30).

"I've had some good finishes at Lowe's, so I don't mind being there two weeks in a row," Riggs explained, who visited the 1.5-mile quad-oval four times during his Busch Series career. "Aside from great racing, Charlotte has an incredible atmosphere. The stands are full of excited race fans. Every track has a grandstand full of remarkable fans, but there's just something about Charlotte that really makes for an awesome atmosphere."

"These next two weeks are going to be fun," Riggs continued. "This Valvoline team is going to go out and work hard and do what we can do to get ourselves in the NASCAR NEXTEL All-Star Challenge."
