Texas with two dates soon?
If they have anything to say about it Texas will get two dates in the near future. Whatever happens this year, Smith wants to see Texas appear twice on the Winston Cup schedule next year and in future seasons. And France is the man who has the final say in whether that will happen.
Gordon rule violation at Daytona?
Several fans have asked if Jeff Gordon violated a rule by going below a yellow line that leads off of pit road when he passed Bill Elliott for the lead late in the Daytona 500. He did not. Cars coming off pit road must not go above that line when they are coming back onto the track, but there's no rule preventing cars on the track from going below it.
How bad does Dale want it?
If Dale Earnhardt does not win Sunday's Pontiac Excitement 400 at Richmond International Raceway, it will mean that he has gone one full cycle around the Winston Cup circuit without a victory. Earnhardt's last win came last March at Atlanta in the season's fourth week. This year's Primestar 500 is March 9. Earnhardt goes into Richmond with a streak of 29 races without a victory. That ties his longest drought since 1984 and is the third longest stretch without a win since the first of his 70 career victories. I'd say he wants it bad. After talking with some friends I agree...If it is Dale and Jeff Gordon on the final lap.....Jeff will go to the wall.
History Making weekend?
Jeff Gordon fans hope so. He can become the first Winston Cup driver to ever win the first three races in a season with a win Sunday at Richmond. To do it, however, he would have to become the first defending Pontiac Excitement 400 champion to win since Darrell Waltrip in 1980 and 1981. Other drivers who were hot early in recent seasons include Bill Elliott, who in 1992 won four straight races beginning with the season's second event, at Rockingham, and Dale Earnhardt, who won six of the first eight races in 1987.
Last Year at Richmond.
Bobby Hamilton led the most laps among 11 different drivers, but Jeff Gordon took the lead on Lap 351, the last of 25 lead changes, and won the Winston Cup race. Terry Labonte won the pole.
