DJ Races for Charity and Second TMS Win
MOORESVILLE, N.C., (November 1, 2005) ----- For the second time in 2005, the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series travels to the state of Texas for action at Texas Motor Speedway. Dale Jarrett and the UPS Team will feature an entirely different look for this round of racing at Texas as they will race the #88 The UPS Store/Toys for Tots Ford in an effort to create awareness and encourage contributions to Toys for Tots. The specially-designed lime green and tomato-red paint scheme was designed by Jarrett's three youngest children, Natalee, Karsyn and Zachary. This weekend's race is part of a fund-raising kick off that started November 1st where individuals are encouraged to purchase a special limited-edition die-cast car at local The UPS Stores with proceeds going to Toys for Tots.
"This weekend is going to be a lot of fun for this race team and me in particular," Jarrett said. "My kids have always wanted to come up with a paint scheme and this was just a perfect opportunity. So, that part of the weekend is going to be fun and we obviously want to help raise awareness for Toys for Tots and encourage everyone to go buy one of the die-cast cars because it is for a great cause."
While Jarrett will be racing for a good cause this weekend, he'll also be racing for a chance to make it into the history books at Texas as the track's first two-time winner. Jarrett and the UPS Team are among the list of former winners at the 1.5-mile track, leading 122 laps in route to the win at the track in 2001. All nine NASCAR NEXTEL Cup races that have taken place at Texas have featured nine different winners.
As an organization, Robert Yates Racing has two wins at Texas, with Elliott Sadler winning at Texas in 2004, when the track hosted only one race. Both drivers will try to get win Texas win number three for car owner Robert Yates this weekend.
As for Jarrett, Texas has been a play ground of sorts for the #88 UPS/Robert Yates Racing Team. Jarrett won the pole for the track's inaugural race in 1997, and finished the event in second place. He has led at least one lap in seven of the nine NEXTEL Cup races to take place at Texas since the inaugural season. While Jarrett has only three-top five finishes at Texas, each of those three top fives have been second place or better. Jarrett's average finish at Texas is 13th.
Jarrett Discusses Racing at Texas Motor Speedway
Do you anticipate anything different with the track with this being the first time you have raced here in the fall?
"I don't see the weather making a huge difference at a track like Texas. Obviously we hope that the aging may help with the grip but that is about the only thing that may be different. It is still a very fast track and it is an aero-dependant track. We've made some changes in that part of our program and we've seen some improvement the last few weeks. We still aren't where we need to be but we're getting there."
Does the same things that work at tracks like Atlanta and Charlotte work at Texas?
"They do in the sense that at the end of the day it all comes down to handling and aerodynamics. The aero part is especially important at these tracks anymore because the way the air hits the car affects the handling so much. You need a good working chassis. You need horsepower, but that's never something we worry about with Doug Yates building the engines. But aero is certainly a big factor in a car's success."
