"The track is a little greasier than it was this morning. You're very fast here at Texas and this Rent-A-Center Taurus they had it tuned up really good for me today -- Fatback McSwain and everybody on the team. I knew we were gonna be good, but we still don't know how it's gonna shake out after qualifying. I don't know if going early is gonna be a disadvantage or an advantage, but I think when the smoke clears we'll be somewhere in the top 10."
CAN YOU EXPLAIN HOW YOU GET THE RIGHT BALANCE IN THE CAR? "Everyone wants to have maximum grip and ideal balance, so what happens is as you're sneaking up on the edge of the adhesion of these tires on the race track, usually one end or the other will break loose, and what most people want here is a car that is fairly neutral. You always have trouble with the front tires when they give up the grip first and then the car starts pushing. You've got to really be sharp on your setups to look ahead and get the balance correctly. Sometimes that means practicing when the balance is not correct so that when the sun comes out and the track heats up, now your balance is right for the conditions."
ELLIOTT SADLER - No. 38 M&M's Taurus (Qualified 8th)
"Our car changed a bunch. I don't know how slow the track got, but I think somebody will run in the oh's pretty easily. I think the track has grip, but our car just changed a bunch. I don't know, maybe some other people's cars will change a little bit too and we won't be as bad as we think, but I think that'll be 10th or 11th. I think we won from like 17th or 19th last year, so we should be OK."
IS IT THE SAME CAR? "No. It's a lot different car and a lot different setup. If you stay the same, you're gonna get passed. So it's a different look, a different car and a little different strategy and attitude. We'll see what happens. That will be 10th or 11th and we'll just try to go get 'em on Sunday."
CARL EDWARDS - No. 99 Scotts Taurus (Qualified 20th)
"Our Scotts Miracle Grow car is gonna be alright in the race. We did a lot of race practice in the first practice session and I'm glad we did because, man, I think that the race conditions are gonna be a little bit different than what we practiced in and at least we got to try some things and get them out of the way. It's just so loose. The sun is coming out and I drove down in the corner and that's as free as I could drive it right there. I'm pretty proud of the lap. Even though it wasn't great on the board, I felt like I did a pretty good job."
WHAT ABOUT GOING FROM A SHORT TRACK TO HERE? "It's so different. I love short track racing, but we've just had terrible luck the last two weeks. I'm glad to be back at a different type of track, but I like going everywhere. Every race track we go to I love, it's just that at some of them you have better luck than others. Somebody told me the other day that you're either the windshield or the bug and the last two weeks we've been the bug. We're having fun anyway."
YOU'VE RUN WELL AT THIS TYPE OF TRACK. "We have the same car that we won with at Atlanta and we've almost got the same setup in it. Everybody is pumped to be here at Texas. It'll be a lot of fun. We had a good test at Phoenix, so I'm looking forward to that next week. I feel like at the short tracks I learned a lot. As bad as it went, the experience that we had there is gonna pay off when we go back to those places later in the season."
GREG BIFFLE - No. 16 National Guard/Post-It Taurus (Qualified 5th)
"It's starting to cool off pretty fast, I think. I think you're gonna see a lot of these cars beat us. I'll be surprised at what that time is gonna be and I bet you we end up 10th or worse. But it was a great lap for right now for us and the Post It car. We've been fighting loose since we got here and that's a good sign for what's to come on Sunday because we think the car is gonna turn really good and that's what we need here for racing. We're pretty confident about that."
MARK MARTIN - No. 6 Viagra Taurus (Qualified 16th)
"It's slick and it's qualifying. I'd be disappointed if that was the race."
HERMIE SADLER - No. 66 Peak Fitness Taurus (Qualified 37th)
"This was a big obstacle for us because we really, really struggled at Atlanta and we still haven't had a chance to go test yet. So thanks to Travis Carter, he let us borrow one of his cars to come here. He had a couple of them in his shop and we didn't know enough about ours to know what we had without testing. We were trying to cut 'em up and move stuff around to get 'em up off the race track because we were bottoming out so bad. So this is one of his cars. Not to say we're happy just making the race, but this particular kind of track has been a problem for us and today is at least a step in the right direction."
