CLINT BOWYER, NO. 33 CHEERIOS/HAMBURGER HELPER CHEVROLET met with media and discussed the new spoiler on the cars and what to expect, double file restarts, and more.
IS THIS THE FIRST RACE WHERE THE SPOILER IS REALLY GOING TO MEAN SOMETHING?
"I think so. This is always a track where you really get aero tight behind cars. Speeds are always really fast and you just get aero tight. I think everybody is really looking forward to seeing how that is going to be and seeing how the cars are going to react behind cars. And hopefully be better. You know, that is why they put them on there and the cars certainly look better. My personal preference is all for the spoiler but I'm looking for a good weekend here. You know, Goodyear brought a new tire here and that is going to throw a little bit different thing in there for us, but so far so good."
WHAT'S THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE FOR YOU GUYS WITH THE NEW SPOILER?
"Yeah, you know just trying to find that aero balance from front to rear just like you did with the wing. We were behind last year and it seemed like we really caught on but a day late and a dollar short. Now we have to be on the leading edge of that and be able to beat everybody to the punch.
"You know, so far so good and these short tracks have been good and our speeds have been good we just have to be good on these 1.5 mile tracks. This is the first fast track we go to and there is a string of them coming up and hopefully a good run here will mean many more to come at some of these other races."
IS IT GOING TO BE WHOEVER IS OUT IN FRONT OF THIS FIELD AND SUCCESSFUL NOW GOING TO BE THAT WAY FROM NOW ON?
"I don't think so. Like I always say, Texas is the kind of track where you get extremely tight in traffic and behind cars. Only time will tell and it's going to be interesting to see what it does. I was over there in a Nationwide car just a little while ago and it was a little tight behind cars, so hopefully it will change a little bit. The wing didn't seem like it did much of anything when we were here but what I think, you know, everybody likes to see cautions. And if you think back with this spoiler when we had them on the cars and we got loose underneath people, created a caution and got us bunched back up and now we got double-file restarts; it shakes the race up even more. I think that is what you are going to see even more looking into the future of these 1.5 mile tracks. Something like that."
WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ON DOUBLE FILE RESTARTS AND HOW THESE RACES HAVE PLAYED OUT AT THE END?
"I like them and I have been on the short end of the stick the last two races. We had top-five cars and we ended up with ninth-place finishes both times. We have got to get better at that and get better at making the right decision at the end. And that is the tricky thing. I don't think there is a right decision. About the time you think you are on to it.....I mean two tires was obviously the way to win the race last week, but will it win the race this week? Probably not. You just never know and you have to be willing to gamble and roll the dice and certainly the 39 did that and came up a winner."
WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ON KASEY KAHNE GOING TO HENDRICK?
"I'm happy for him. He is a good kid, and a good friend and a good racer. It's going to make Hendrick even stronger. They are a powerhouse now and getting youth in there right now. Certainly they are on top of their game right now. But with Kasey Kahne, he has won races, and a proven winner and with the right equipment I would say that he could prove that he could win a championship too."
HOW WILL THE SPOILER BE AT TALLADEGA? "Yeah, you know Talladega is another track where it could be a change but only time will tell and I don't think anyone really knows but at the short tracks, it wasn't any change. I don't think anybody could say 'my car handled better' because of that spoiler. You know I think Texas here is the first place we are going to see the true test of what this spoiler is going to do. Talladega will be the next."
