TALLADEGA, Ala. (Sept. 22, 1998) Ten drivers tested Tuesday at Talladega Superspeedway, but not all will be back for next month's Oct. 11 NASCAR Winston Cup Series Winston 500 in the same equipment.
Only Wally Dallenbach, Rick Mast and Buckshot Jones tested with the teams they will race with in two and a half weeks.
Dallenbach tested the No. 50 Budweiser Chevrolet for Hendrick Motorsports, while Mast was behind the wheel of the No. 75 Remington Arms Ford he normally drives. Jones tested the No. 00 Stavola Brothers Chevrolet that he will make his Talladega NASCAR Winston Cup Series debut in next month.
Drivers Ted Musgrave, Hut Stricklin, Lake Speed, Kirk Shelmerdine and Mike Dillon all were testing NASCAR Winston Cup Series cars Tuesday, but not necessarily the cars they will race at Talladega.
Stricklin is in the second day of a three-day test for Andy Petree's No. 55 Chevrolet, while Musgrave pitched in to help Dale Earnhardt Inc. as he tested the No. 1 Pennzoil Chevrolet for driver Steve Park. Speed helped Jones with the Stavola Brothers Realtree Extra Chevy, while Shelmerdine tested the No. 96 American Equipment Racing/Catepillar Chevrolet for owner Buz McCall. Dillon tested the Jasper Engines Ford usually driven by Robert Pressley.
Only Musgrave is a certain entry in the Winston 500, as he is scheduled to drive the FIRSTPLUS Financial Ford for car owners Bill Elliott and Dan Marino. Shelmerdine is expected to run the ARCA Bondo/Mar-Hyde Series Winn-Dixie 300 on Saturday, Oct. 10.
"Steve is still a little banged up from his practice crash at Homestead, so I'm just down here helping these guys out," said Musgrave, who has raced several different cars since parting ways with car owner Jack Roush in August. "I'm going to drive the Jasper Engines car this weekend at Martinsville for Robert Pressley and then I'll be at Charlotte and back down here with Bill's No. 13 car.
"Bill ran pretty good here in the spring, so I'm looking forward to getting back down here."
ARCA driver Mark Thompson and NASCAR Busch Series Grand National Division driver Lyndon Amick also tested Tuesday at the 2.66-mile track.
Tickets still remain for the Winston 500, as well as the Oct. 10 Winn-Dixie 300. For ticket information call the Talladega ticket office hotline at (256) 362-7223.
