Andretti Grabs Pole for Sunday's Winston 500 TALLADEGA, Ala. -- John Andretti led 49 cars in Busch Pole Qualifying Friday at Talladega Superspeedway for Sunday's NASCAR Winston Cup Series Winston 500. Andretti, capturing his first Busch Pole Award of the season and the second of his career, toured the 2.66-mile high-banked facility in 49.456 seconds, an average speed of 193.627 mph. The top 25 positions were secured in Friday's qualifying with the rest of the starting order determined in Busch Beer Second-Round Qualifying today (Saturday) at 11 a.m. "This team is just great," said Andretti. "We haven't had the season we wanted to have, but we knew this would be a good race for us." Running second to Andretti was Bobby Hillin, who won the 1986 Sears DieHard 500 at Talladega, his only career NASCAR Winston Cup victory. Hillin was clocked at 49.547, an average speed of 193.271 mph. "This is just such a team effort," said Hillin. "Last year we came here and missed the show, so its a great testament to just how hard this team has worked. We haven't had a lot to cheer about this year so far, so this is a great accomplishment for us." Rounding out the top-five were Dale Earnhardt (192.699 mph), Rusty Wallace (192.397 mph) and Mike Skinner (192.343 mph). The best of the NASCAR Busch Series gets the green flag Saturday at 12 p.m. (CDT) for the Birmingham Automobile Dealers 500K presented by EasyCare. The Winston 500 is set for a 12 p.m. (CDT) start on Sunday. For tickets, contact the Speedway ticket office at (205) 362-9064.
