NOTES AND QUOTES Winston Select 500 Talladega Superspeedway April 28, 1996

Note: Today's ninth-place run enabled JOHNNY BENSON to capture his first career top-10 finish

JOHNNY BENSON (No. 30 Pennzoil Pontiac Grand Prix): ''We got a good finish, but 1 don't know if we were as good as we needed to be We had a lot of help with that big accident. We ran up front a little bit T need some more drafting experience, that's all. I think the race was a little off. I think we need a little work on the speedway car I think once we get the new nose and whatever else they're changing, I think the car will be in better shape. I was in 10th on that last restart and went back. If I had somebody in front of me and behind me the car would run really good. If I was the last guy I couldn't hardly stay up there I think all in all we ran good. I think with the coming body change we'll be better than we are now, and that's what we need, just a little bit more. We're gaining on it, but not at the rate we want.''

BOBBY HAMILTON (No. 43 STP Pontiac Grand Prix): ''We had to stay in line in order to stay up there. Dick Trickle went a lap down and I don't know what he was thinking about. When we finally got by him he went half a straightaway behind us. I don't know what he was thinking. Every time I'd make a run on him he would pull down against me and run me over trying to hold me back It was the craziest thing I've ever seen in my life. I fell back and finally hooked on to the second draft pack, but I needed a draft pack to hold on to. It's different running with the front guys. They're a lot smoother. The car ran well. I never lifted all day. We're just a little bit off on power, but the car drafts good. It would go anywhere I wanted it to. We were fortunate not to get any of those accidents. We were fortunate to be running up front. We've talked about it and said, 'They're way overdue for a big wreck here ' I didn't know they were gong to have a couple of them. It seems to run in cycles here. Every couple of years they seem to have one. I think with the changes coming on the Pontlac we're going to be a lot better here and at Daytona next time. It looked like some of the Pontiacs were pushing today, but my car didn't push. Maybe we've got a little better front end than some of them. It really drove good."

RICK MAST (No. 1 Hooters Pontiac Grand Prix): ''I had a good car. We had a flat right-rear early on, and we got that early caution so we were able to come in and fix that. I passed a bunch of cars after that and I got up into the lead air pack. We came back in and had a bad stop, but I got going again when we got another caution. I pitted again and went to the tail end again. That was the thing that hurt us all day, trouble in the pits. Something happened to Marcis and he slowed down and I slowed down, and somebody hit me in the rear, and I sent him spinning. The car would run good for 7O laps and then get loose. During the last pit stop we tightened it up some and it took off like it was going to be OK because I got with Sterling there and we were humming. Then it got loose and I thought I had a tire going flat, but what happened is that they had taped the panel back on the left-rear, and it flew off. We should be better here next the with the body changes we're working on."

WARD BURTON (No. 2 MBNA Pontiac Grand Prix): "I hung on tight because I was afraid it would shoot right up the banking during that wreck. I committed to go low and almost made it through. Mark (Martin) was spinning all over the place, and his car came down and hit my right front. We were able to get to the front because when other cars got loose after long runs, I was able to turn it right down coming off each turn. It would really go fast then."
