Talladega, AL - Jimmie Johnson will start his No. 48 Lowe's Impala SS on the pole of the AMP Energy 500 at Talladega Superspeedway as the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup point series leader because rain forced NASCAR to cancel qualifying for the sixth time this season.

This is the fourth time the three-time and defending NASCAR Sprint Cup Series (NSCS) champion will lead the 43-car field to the green flag in 2009.

The field has been set by the provisions set forth in the NSCS rule book and puts Mark Martin, No. 5 Pop Tarts/CARQUEST Impala SS alongside Johnson on the front row.

Four-time NSCS champion Jeff Gordon, No. 24 DuPont Impala SS, and Tony Stewart, No. 14 Office Depot/Old Spice Impala SS, will form the second row of the starting grid by virtue of sitting third and fourth respectively in the standings.

Juan Pablo Montoya, No. 42 Target Impala SS, will roll off sixth for the 188-lap/500-mile race on Sunday. Ryan Newman will start seventh in the No. 39 US Army Impala SS.

A total of 16 Chevy Impala SS drivers, more than any other manufacturer, will start race 33rd race of the 2009 season.
