TALLADEGA, Ala. (March 25, 1998)
Talladega Superspeedway will add 11,000 tower seats in the tri-oval area of the race track in time for October's Winston 500 NASCAR Winston Cup Series event, speedway President Grant Lynch has announced. The new Tri-Oval Tower will enclose the tower seats on the frontstretch of the 2.66-mile track, connecting the O.V. Hill North Tower and the O.V. Hill South Tower. The new seats will be contoured 20-inch seats with arm rests and will be 25 rows high.
"I believe this is going to be the premiere seat in racing," Lynch said. "Our tower seats always have been fast sellers, and I believe these seats won't be around long.
"It's kind of like we've saved our best for last. These seats are like the equivalent of a 50-yard line seat at a football stadium. They are located just across from pit road. There's not a spot on the track you won't be able to see from these seats."
The Tri-Oval Tower seats can be purchased for $175, which includes a seat for both Saturday's ARCA Bondo/Mar-Hyde Series race and Sunday's Winston 500. Those fans who purchase the tickets for the weekend will have renewal rights on a race-by-race basis.
Talladega Superspeedway has added permanent grandstand seats nine of the last 10 years. Since 1987, more than 47,000 seats have been added to NASCAR's most competitive track. The latest addition brings the grandstand capacity to approximately 120,000 permanent seats.
In the past, 10,000 temporary grandstands have been brought in to accommodate the large crowds.
"The Tri-Oval Tower will allow some of our folks who have been sitting on the backstretch in our temporary seats the opportunity to move to the frontstretch," Lynch said. "We're bringing in the temporary seats for the next month's race, and if these tickets sell as fast as I expect them to, we may have temporary seating in the fall."
In order to enclose the tower seats along the frontstretch, a new press facility was built and will be ready for the April 26 DieHard 500. The Tri-Oval Towers will be built above the new press box.
October's 'White Knuckle Weekend' is set for Oct. 8-11, culminating with the Winston 500 on Sunday, Oct. 11.
