Suspended Allmendinger enters NASCAR rehabilitation program

Eric Mauk

Suspended indefinitely after his second drug test sample came back positive yesterday, Penske Racing's A.J. Allmendinger today announced, through his business manager, that he has already entered the NASCAR-mandated rehabilitation program called the 'Road to Recovery'.

Allmendinger's camp released the following statement this afternoon: “While we await further information from testing to determine the cause, we have notified NASCAR that AJ will participate in the Road to Recovery Program starting immediately. As we have stated earlier, we respect NASCAR's drug testing policies. They are first and foremost in place to protect drivers and AJ being among those. We fully support the program, and and as more details become available, we will share them. We would like to personally thank Mr. Helton and John Bobo for helping worked through this in an expeditious manner.”

Allmendinger's camp continues to report that the NASCAR Sprint Cup driver tested positive for a stimulant, and that Allmendigner is going to have tested conducted on everything in his motor home to find out what could have caused a positive reading on his drug test.

He is suspended by NASCAR at least until the completion of the program, and his Penske Racing team is putting Sam Hornish Jr. behind the wheel of the #22 Dodge for the interim.
