NASCAR Winston Cup Series team owner Junie Donlavey named Hut Stricklin on Tuesday to drive the No. 90 Hills Bros. Coffee Fords for the remainder of the season. Donlavey said Stricklin, who has been with the team for three weeks, alternating between driver and crew chief, has used his leadership and work ethic to help turn around the team's fortunes.

"He has been a positive influence on the team in every aspect," Donlavey said. "His performance and determination at Indy lifted the spirits of our team to a new level, and we want to continue improving."

Stricklin, named to drive the car at Indianapolis in place of Ed Berrier, qualified 36th and drove to a 14th-place, lead-lap finish.

"I'm excited about the opportunity, and I want to get this team competitive again and make it feel like we are top-10 or 15 team," Stricklin said. "We think we have what it takes do that with the remainder of the season."

Donlavey has not hired another crew chief because Stricklin, who has been calling the shots for himself, said he wants to take the time to hire someone he is sure will complement him.
