CHARLOTTE, NC -- Last year Dale Earnhardt Inc. searched for the right chemistry to take the Pennzoil Racing Team to the next competitive level. They found the guidance they sought in crew chief Paul Andrews.
It was during The Winston events at Lowe's Motor Speedway last year that the Pennzoil team first showcased their newfound success. With starting positions based on practice times, Park sat on the front row for one of the No Bull 25s, used to set the field for the Winston Open. A loose plug wire during the 25-lap event relegated Park to the 11th position, which put him in the 21st starting spot for The Winston Open. During the Winston Open, Park maneuvered his way toward the front with an impressive run -- charging to a fifth-place finish in just 50 laps.
That was just a sign of things to come for the Pennzoil team. The very next weekend during the Coca-Cola 600, Park led a total of 84 laps under the direction of Andrews and was hopeful for his first Winston Cup victory until handling problems took him out of contention. Since then, Paul Andrews has guided Steve Park in the #1 Pennzoil Chevrolet to eight top-10 finishes and his first ever Bud Pole Award, earned at Bristol this spring.
"We have always just tried to work on consistency," said Andrews, who led Jeremy Mayfield to his first Winston Cup win while serving as his crew chief. "Each week the Pennzoil team just keeps getting better and better. We've been running up front more often and that is what it will take to get that Chevrolet into victory lane."
"I can't begin to tell you what Paul Andrews has meant to this program," said Park. "Paul has got those Pennzoil cars set up to run competitively every week and that builds confidence, not only in myself but in the team and you can't win a race without the whole team working together."
As other teams create new paint schemes to bring attention to themselves, the Pennzoil team sits quietly lurking at the chance to burst into victory lane, and not only during the Winston Open to earn that coveted position into The Winston. With the consistency and competitiveness shown this season, it's just a matter of time before Park and Andrews are joined in victory lane by the rest of the Pennzoil crew.
