No. 40 Coors Light Dodge finishes 17th in the EA Sports 500
TALLADEGA, Ala. (October 21, 2001) -- The Coors Light Dodge Intrepid R/T driven by Sterling Marlin finished 17th in the EA Sports 500 at Talladega Superspeedway. Marlin dropped to fourth overall in the NASCAR Winston Cup Series championship points standings; he is three points out of third place.
The Coors Light Dodge began the event in third position and Marlin moved up through the field to lead the EA Sports 500 from lap 5 to 8 - picking up five NASCAR Winston Cup championship bonus points in the process.
Marlin worked the outside line during the beginning of the race, but fell back to 12th position by lap 10. Due to past events at Daytona and Talladega, the team decided to fall to the back of the field around lap 18 to play it safe and not get caught in" the big wreck."
During green flag pit stops, the Coors Light team came in and took four tires on lap 48 with the rest of the lead pack. The No. 40 car went out and hung in the middle of the lead pack for the next 50 laps.
On lap 94, during a caution period, Marlin came in for four tires and a tire pressure adjustment to tighten the car up. The No. 40 car restarted the event in seventh position and ran in the top-15 until the caution came out on lap 130 for debris on the track. Marlin brought the Coors Light Dodge in for four tires and restarted in 14th position.
Marlin moved up to ninth position when a caution came out on lap 149 for a spin in turn 4. Tony Glover, team manager, brought the No. 40 car in for fuel only hoping there would not be another caution and the team could go the rest of the way without having to stop again.
Marlin worked the lower, middle and high lanes to gain position for the remainder of the 188-lap event. Unfortunately, Marlin was caught in a multi-car accident on the last lap of the EA Sports 500. The Coors Light Dodge finished the Talladega event in 17th place.
"It just depended on where you got today," Marlin said. " If you got boxed in, there wasn't much you could do about it. When you weren't, you couldn't lead. I was clear on that last lap and somebody ran into the back of me."
Next on the schedule for the No. 40 Coors Light Dodge team is the Checker Auto Parts 500 at Phoenix International Raceway on Sunday, Oct. 28.
