Marlin Finishes 11th In Pop Secret 400
ROCKINGHAM, N.C. (November 4, 2001)– The Coors Light Dodge Intrepid R/T driven by Sterling Marlin finished 11th in the Pop Secret Microwave Popcorn 400 at North Carolina Speedway. Marlin remains fifth overall in the NASCAR Winston Cup Series championship points standings; he is 65 points out of fourth place.
The Coors Light Dodge began the event in 18th position and moved into the top-10 by lap 47. After pitting on lap 174 with the majority of the field, a caution came out and put the No. 40 Coors Light Dodge a lap down. Marlin competed in the top-15 during the majority of the event. The Coors Light team caught and passed all the cars a lap down except one, finishing the Pop Secret 400 in 11th place and one lap down.
“ We got caught like everybody else and had to play catch-up the rest of the day,” Marlin said. “ We just about got a top-10 out of it, and I think the car was definitely a top-10 car. That’s the way it goes. We’ve got three to go, and we’ll just go out and try to get all we can get.”
“ We started the race way too loose and we couldn’t get it tightened up,” said Lee McCall, crew chief of the No. 40 Coors Light Dodge. “ We finally got it half way decent on the last stop but we just started off way too loose and couldn’t gain on anyone today.”
The No. 40 Coors Light pit crew competed in the Union 76– Rockingham World Pit Crew Competition. The Coors Light team finished in 10th place with a time of 21.862 seconds.
Next on the schedule for the No. 40 Coors Light Dodge team is the Pennzoil 400 at Homestead-Miami Speedway on Sunday, Nov. 11.
