Marlin Finishes 34th At Phoenix
PHOENIX, Ariz. (October 28, 2001)– The Coors Light Dodge Intrepid R/T driven by Sterling Marlin finished 34th in the Checker Auto Parts 500 at Phoenix International Raceway. Marlin dropped to fifth overall in the NASCAR Winston Cup Series championship points standings; he is 35 points out of fourth place.
The Coors Light Dodge began the event in 31st position and moved up to 25th position by lap 27. On lap 33, the No. 40 Coors Light Dodge scraped the wall after puncturing the right front tire. The right front nose suffered body damage and the right front tire alignment was off. Marlin pitted twice during the caution period. The Coors Light team changed all four tires and worked on the right side damage before sending the car out one lap down in 42nd position.
Throughout the 312-lap event, the Coors Light team pitted multiple times to fix the right front of the car. Marlin finished the Checker Auto Parts 500 three laps down in 34th position.
“ I think we were going to have a pretty good car but we just never got a chance to see,” said Marlin. “ That’s the way it goes. We’ve had a lot of luck this season, but we didn’t have any today. Maybe it’ll turn around next week at Rockingham.”
“ Unfortunately, we had a puncture in the tire and had it go down on us early in the race,” said Lee McCall, crew chief of the No. 40 Coors Light Dodge. “ We struggled with fixing the right front fender and toe all day. We lost some ground in the points race but we’ll just have to come back next week in Rockingham and get it done.”
Next on the schedule for the No. 40 Coors Light Dodge team is the Pop Secret Microwave Popcorn 400 at North Carolina Speedway on Sunday, Nov. 4.
