Steering wheel malfunctions for Dale Earnhardt Jr. in practice

Second practice ends with a miscue for the No. 88 Hendrick Motorsports Chevroletat Dover International Speedway

Dale Earnhardt Jr. had an unusual occurrence in second practice at Dover International Speedway when he reported a broken steering wheel.

"The steering wheel broke internally," Earnhardt said.

"I heard you say that, that's not cool,” replied his crew chief Steve Letarte "I'll take a look at it."

"Yeah,” Earnhardt said with a laugh. “I'd be in trouble."

Earnhardt posted the eighth fastest lap in practice – 153.283mph. The team replaced the broken wheel prior to Happy Hour.

Matt Kenseth topped the speed chart with a lap of 155.649mph, followed by AJ Allmendinger, Denny Hamlin, Clint Bowyer and Kasey Kahne. Nine time Dover winner Jimmie Johnson posted the 13th fastest time.

Before the issue with his steering wheel, he told the crew, ““The right rear shock tightened it up right before the second compression. The sway bar seems to his the center real hard since we put it in.”

Earnhardt rolls off 25th for Sunday’s AAA 400.
