CHARLOTTE, N.C., (Oct. 28, 1999) - While the record books will show that Square D Chevrolet driver Kenny Wallace finished 16th at North Carolina Speedway on Sunday, it will not show how Wallace fought with the likes of Jeff Gordon and Tony Stewart for 11th place.

With Dale Jarrett and the Burton brothers (Jeff and Ward) setting a blistering pace at the 1.017-mile oval, keeping the leaders in sight was a challenge by itself. But Wallace did just that, running as the first car one lap down for the majority of the race. However, with five laps to go in the 393-lap event, Wallace thought he had a tire going down. That enabled his pursuers to get by, dropping him to 16th.

Upon climbing from the Square D Chevy to inspect his tires, Wallace noticed that it wasn't a lack of air pressure which caused him to backpedal. Rather it was a lack of rubber, as the steel cords which provide structure to the tires were showing.

The 32nd stop on this year's NASCAR Winston Cup Series calendar will mark the one-year anniversary of the pairing between Square D Chevrolet driver Kenny Wallace and crew chief Jimmy Elledge.

When Wallace rolled into Phoenix International Raceway last year with FILMAR Racing, filling-in for interim crew chief David Ifft was Elledge, as Ifft had a family reunion to attend. The then 28-year-old Elledge had been tabbed by team owner Andy Petree to be Wallace's crew chief in 1999, as Wallace and Square D were moving to Petree's new multi-car organization. FILMAR owner Filbert Martocci graciously agreed to have Elledge serve as Wallace's crew chief, despite the fact that neither Elledge, Wallace nor Square D would be a part of his race team in 1999.

The pairing was an instant hit, with Wallace qualifying third and finishing a solid eighth. Now the duo returns to Phoenix with a special Aerosmith paint scheme, and more importantly, confidence in their abilities to notch their first win together.

"Sweet Daddy is taking his favorite car to Phoenix," said Wallace. "It's the same car we ran at Loudon (N.H.), Martinsville (Va.) and Richmond (Va.). Jimmy noted that I liked the type of car we brought to Phoenix last year. So, he and the guys went to work, and with a few adjustments of their own, built a great race car.

"What makes this deal even better is that we've got it painted up in Aerosmith colors. I'm pinching myself because it's like a kid's dream to have the greatest rock and roll band to have ever lived on my race car. That's my favorite group and they'll be on my quarterpanels. I want to win any time, but I really want to win at Phoenix."
