NASCAR officials announced today that the Featherlite Southwest Series, a NASCAR Touring division, will expand its schedule to include a street race in downtown Los Angeles. The Ford/NASCAR Featherlite Southwest Series L.A. Street Race will be held Monday, Sept. 7, during Labor Day weekend with qualifying scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 6.

The race is the first of its kind on the streets of a major city for the Featherlite Southwest Series, although teams already compete at the 1.949-mile Sears Point Raceway road course in Sonoma, Calif., and the 1.944-mile Portland (Ore.) International Raceway road course. The Series competes predominately on paved short tracks throughout the southwest United States as well as at the one-mile Phoenix International Raceway and the 1.5-mile Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

"The Featherlite Southwest Series is a leading NASCAR Touring division, and will provide fans with exciting racing through the streets of Los Angeles," said Dennis Huth, NASCAR vice president for administration. "We are excited about the opportunity for our competitors to race in an exciting environment like Exposition Park."

The Ford/NASCAR Featherlite Southwest Series L.A. Street Race will take place on a 1.4-mile, six-turn course that borders the Sports Arena, Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, the University of Southern California, and the new California ScienCenter.

The Featherlite Southwest Series is one of NASCAR's 13 divisions of racing which includes the weekly NASCAR Winston Racing Series, eight NASCAR Touring divisions, the NASCAR Winston West Series as well as the NASCAR Winston Cup Series, NASCAR Busch Series and NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series.
