JUAN PABLO MONTOYA, NO. 42 TARGET CHEVROLET met with media and discussed road course racing and different strategies, green-white-checkereds, how other racing series tackle road courses, and more.
WOULD YOU EVER LIKE TO RUN A CUP CAR AT ROAD AMERICA? "I would rather run in Road America than here, to be honest. That's a real circuit."
HOW DO YOU THINK GREEN-WHITE-CHECKERED WILL AFFECT THE STRATEGY? "I think it'll be big because I'll guarantee you're going to see a couple of them. If you get a caution with like 10 laps to go, from there to the end of the race it's going to be caution, green, caution, green. You're not going to run more than three laps, you know? But, we'll see."
HOW CHALLENGING IS IT TO MOVE UP THROUGH THE PACK? "It's pretty easy until you get to like 10th place and then it gets a little harder."
IS THAT JUST BECAUSE EVERYBODY IS RACING EACH OTHER? "Yeah, early on, it's a lot about strategy and how early you pit and everything. So, you've got to see how late you're going to go or how short you're going to do it. The shorter you go, the harder you can be on the car and the tires because you're going to get off those tires very quickly."
CLINT BOWYER WAS TALKING ABOUT HOW YOU RACE SEE SOMEBODY IN FRONT OF YOU DO A JUMP OVER A CURB OR DO SOMETHING AND YOU LAUGH; THEN MINUTES LATER YOU'RE IN THE SAME SITUATION. IS IT THAT MUCH FUN IN THE CAR HERE? "For what I've driven? No. It's crazy because this is like for me its awkward being in these cars on a road course."
WHY? "Because there's just no grip. You know what I mean? The track by itself is really slow. It's just different. Put it that way."
WHEN YOU WERE AT WATKINS GLEN LAST YEAR, YOU CLIPPED A GUY ON PIT ROAD COMING OUT OF YOUR PIT STALL. HOW AWARE ARE YOU OF THE GUYS AROUND YOU?" "This is the first thing they told me. My guys told me this. If you hit us, it's our fault. So don't worry about it. I don't. I really don't."
ARE THERE TRACKS WHERE IT'S MORE DIFFICULT TO GET IN AND OUT OF YOUR PIT STALL? "Yeah. You've got to give them a little bit of room but I mean if the guy is running like four feet of the car because he can, I can run two feet of the car do you know what I mean? As long as you give me enough room to get around, it's fine. I don't even remember. I'm trying to figure out what happened. Was it leaving or arriving?"
YOU WERE GOING OUT "Sorry, I guess. I don't know. I don't remember."
HOW DO YOU GUYS DISTINGUISH AT THE END OF THE RACE WHEN YOU CAN PUSH AND WHEN IT'S 'GO' TIME OR WHEN YOU'RE SUPPOSED TO HANG BACK MORE? "You've got to take advantage when you can. There's a lot of passing opportunities and you can either take them or leave them. It's simple. Every time you take one, you take a chance."
SO DO YOU TAKE FEWER CHANCES EARLY? "Yeah, but early on people run and give you a lot of room. At the end of the race they're a lot harder. You're really packed up until you get into (turn) 7. There's always wrecks down there. You either want to be ahead of those or behind those."
IS THERE ANYBODY YOU'VE RACED ON A ROAD COURSE IN CUP THAT YOU'VE HAD A BATTLE WITH THAT AFTERWARDS YOU COULD LOOK BACK AND SAY YOU ENJOYED? "Always in the moment, you either enjoy it or you don't. You enjoy it when it's good racing and it pisses you off when they just punt you."
IS THERE ANYBODY IN PARTICULAR THAT YOU'VE HAD THAT ENJOYABLE EXPERIENCE WITH? "In Formula 1 I did with Michael (Schumacher). It was always as you said, you always get angry when you get beat and you enjoy it when you've beaten them."
WHAT ABOUT IN CUP ON A ROAD COURSE? "Not really. So far, no. You know people run here very different. People are used to running side-by-side through the corners. When you really drive like (Mattias) Ekstrom, he comes from DTM, you're inside somebody and he'll drive them all the way to the grass."
THEY RACE TOTALLY DIFFERENT "Yeah, here is like you get inside of them and you've got to give them room; they expect to run half a lap side-by-side. It's just different."
WHERE ARE THE DRIVERS MORE TALENTED? HERE OR IN F-1? "On a road course, Formula I and on an oval, here. Oh, that's a great answer (laughs)."
HOW ABOUT OVERALL? "I think there is talent everywhere. A good driver is a good driver. I managed to succeed there and I've managed to succeed here. So, yeah."
IS THERE A WAY YOU CAN TELL WHO IS VULNERABLE ON A ROAD COURSE OR DO YOU KNOW WHEN TO PICK YOUR MARKS WITH SOMEBODY BECAUSE THEY MAY NOT HAVE THE KIND OF TALENT YOU DO ON A ROAD COURSE? "No, I don't know. You see opportunity, you take it; or you don't. It's as I said before, when you do, there is always consequences. They can either give you room or you belt in and you hit each other. It can go really smooth or it can be really aggressive. You want to make sure every time you do something if it's going to get aggressive you'd better know that you're going to get out on top."
ON KNOWING WHO HAS GOOD EQUIPMENT AND WHO HE CAN USE AS A MARK "I don't think about anybody as a mark. With these cars, (when) they drive good you're fast or they drive bad, you're slow. I don't think the driver can really make up for anything, or very little."
WERE YOU SURPRISED AT THE HARD RACING YOU SAW IN THE TURKISH GRAND PRIX? "I didn't see the race, so I don't know."
ON THE VETTEL-WEBBER INCIDENT "Oh, yeah, I did see that part! Yeah, I saw that. But, I don't know. I don't think it was that harsh. I really don't, do you know what I mean? Vettel got ahead of him and Webber never moved. Webber wanted to leave him in the dirt and somebody's got to give. And when you don't, that's what happens."
ON DANICA PATRICK'S RETURN TO NASCAR AT NEW HAMPSHIRE RACE AND SWITCHING BACK & FORTH BETWEEN STOCK CAR & INDYCAR SERIES "I thought she was starting to do really well. In the last race she ran, you could tell she was picking up the pace and was getting better. I don't know, it will be interesting to see what happens now. She only ran big tracks so now to go to a small one it's going to be different."
WHO WEARS THE FIRE SUIT IN THE FAMILY? "Oh, the wife; absolutely (laughter)."
