GOING TO SONOMA

"It's always fun to go up to Sonoma. There's a lot to do. I think it's good to go to places like California. I like going out west to race. Fontana is one of the tracks I really like and how can you not like going to a place like Sonoma. Road courses are a nice little change from our normal routine."

ROAD COURSE RACING

"It's such a funny thing road courses. Sometimes I feel like I've done well, other times not. A lot of it depends on the kind of car that you have. I've done okay at them before. I seem to do better at Watkins Glen for some reason, but I really like Sears Point. I'm not going to lie, they can be tough if you don't have the track position and the car's not just the way you want it. I like them though. Like I've said, they're a nice change."

PLANS FOR OFF WEEKEND

"I'm not sure what we're going to do on our off weekend. I might just stay at home. I don't know. Shana (fiancée) and I haven't really decided what we are going to do. I kind of just want to hang out though."

STATS & FACTS

This weekend's race marks Mayfield's 253rd career start in the NASCAR Winston Cup Series. In six career starts at Sears Point, Mayfield's best finish (seventh) came in the 1999 race. His most recent start at Sears Point came in last year, where he started 40th and finished 39th.

Last weekend at Michigan, Mayfield started in the 31st spot. He experienced trouble early on in the No. 19 Dodge Dealers Intrepid R/T and on lap 81 he was forced to make a green flag pit stop for what appeared to be a cut tire. He would go several laps down, finishing the day in 36th place.

After last weekend's finish at Michigan, Mayfield remained in 25th place in points. Mayfield is just 162 points out of 20th place. His season-high ranking this year was 16th, which he reached after an 11th place finish at Martinsville. Mayfield's best overall finish in the Winston Cup points race came in 1998 when he ranked seventh at the season's end.

Mayfield's second-place run this year at Las Vegas was his best run at the track and his best overall finish since the 2000 Pennzoil 400 at Homestead-Miami where he finished second. The finish also qualified Mayfield for the Winston No Bull 5 $1 million bonus during the May race in Charlotte.

Mayfield's best finish this season came at Lowe's Motor Speedway in Concord, NC. He won the pole and the race at The Winston Open exhibition.

Coming into the 2002 season, Mayfield had 237 starts, with six poles (two at Talladega and one at Darlington, Dover, Rockingham, and Texas), three wins (two at Pocono, and one at California), 33 top fives and 58 top 10s. His most recent win came at Pocono in June of 2000.
