SONOMA, Calif. - Jeff Gordon holds the NASCAR record for most consecutive road course victories. This weekend, he looks to build on it. A victory in this weekend's Save Mart/Kragen 350 at Sears Point Raceway would give Gordon an unprecedented sixth consecutive road course victory, tie him for first on the all-time Winston Cup road course victory list and give him the most wins at Sears Point. The victory streak began with the 1997 event at Watkins Glen, N.Y. In 1998, he swept both road course events at Sears Point and Watkins Glen while qualifying on the pole for each of them. In 1999, Gordon won both road course races, qualified on the pole at Sears Point, but could only "manage" a third-place starting spot at Watkins Glen. "This streak that we're on right now is amazing," Gordon said. "I struggled at the road courses during my first few years on the circuit. I improved my road course skills and this DuPont Automotive Finishes team stepped up our road course program. The hard work we've put in is showing in our results." Added incentive for Gordon will be a return "home." He grew up in nearby Vallejo and loves to race in front of his hometown fans. "The fans always make me feel at home at Sears Point," Gordon said. "Growing up so close makes a victory here that much sweeter." The hometown fans have had a lot to cheer about since Gordon joined the Winston Cup circuit in 1993. In seven previous starts at Sears Point, he has two poles, two wins, four top-fives, five top-10's and led 140 laps. Since 1995, Gordon has started no worse than sixth and finished no worse than sixth at Sonoma. A win this weekend would pad those stats and put Gordon in some elite company. It would tie him for first in all-time victories on road courses with Richard Petty, Bobby Allison and Rusty Wallace.
