Gilliland Qualifies Adobe Road Chevy 32nd at Infineon
Sonoma, Calif., (June 19, 2009) - David Gilliland qualified the Adobe Road Winery Chevrolet Impala SS in 32nd position for Sunday's running of the Toyota SaveMart 350 at Infineon Raceway in Sonoma, California. The track is the home circuit for TRG Motorsports and driver David Gilliland returns to the site of his best NASCAR finish to date, second place last year.
It is dejà vu for Gilliland, of Riverside, California, who qualified his wine liveried Chevy in 32nd with a time of 1:17.99 and an average speed of 92 mph. Gilliland qualified last year in 32nd as well and ended up second in the race.
Fast off of the trailer, crew chief Richard "Slugger" Labbe and the guys, had the Chevy up to speed, running 16th at the end of the first practice.
"In practice the car was really good," Gilliland said. "Slugger (Labbe crew chief) and the guys put a good piece together. We were really fast in practice and we made a few changes for qualifying. The car was a little on the tight side. I had a really good run going and just missed it a little in the last part of the esses. We are going to have our work cut out for us in the race. The car handles well and drives well. Sunday is going to be a great race for us."
Happy Hour tomorrow morning will be key for the team to dial the No. 71 Chevy in just right for Sunday.
"In Happy Hour we have some work to do. We are really close with the car at this point. I have never had a car this good this early in the weekend at a road course. I am really happy with the drivability of the car."
Starting toward the back will have the driver and team on their toes all afternoon Sunday.
"We have a ways to go in the race to get to the front. With good strategy and a strong car we can definitely get up and pass some cars. I think the brakes are outstanding on the car, best brakes on any road course car I've had ever. That gives me a lot of confidence to come through the field on Sunday."
TRG Motorsports Team Principal, Kevin Buckler, who lives in nearby Marin, County, is proud to see the car with Adobe Road Winery livery on it at Infineon.
"I have been in this garage area a hundred times with sports cars and always dreamed of being here with a NASCAR Sprint Cup car," Buckler said. "The team put together a great car, one that was in the DEI warehouse a month ago. This is a good track for David and he has all of the tools to get the car back up to the front. We will all be on our game with strategy and in the pits to help him get up to the front. We are having a great weekend at our home track and we are really looking forward to having a strong run on Sunday."
Gilliland qualified the No. 45 Camping World West Series car owned by Daryl Wong in fifth place for tomorrow's race.
