I've received quite a bit of mail over the last few months about the following issue.
>From a 3/4 page ad (note: not an article, but a paid advertisement) in the 10/23/97 edition of Winston Cup Scene (typos are my responsibility, but content of the ad is as it was in Winston Cup Scene).
WASHINGTON WANTS TO BAN RACE SCANNERS!
If currently proposed legislation pending in Congress passes, there may well be no more scanners for racing or anything else. It could be against federal law to use or even listen to your existing scanner based on the pending legislation. The problem they are aiming at again is receiving cellular telephone conversations, but their "shotgun approach" this time is going to shoot down everyone. Hidden deep in their bill are the words "any commercial mobile service" - that's the problem. Pagers, radio telephones, and numerous other "commercial mobile services" share many frequency ranges with the regular frequency ranges used by the private business sector. Race team frequencies are in the private business sector and most would be eliminated if the bill passes.
Race Fans - Your Help is Needed!!!
Please write your Senators and Representatives in Washington and ask them to vote against H.R. 2369.
If you need the names and addresses of your senators and representatives, check the lobby of your local post office for their complete address.
On the web, check http://congress.org.
You should also write the sponsor of H.R. 2369:
The Honorable W. J. Tauzin 2183 Rayburn House Office Bldg. Washington, DC 20515
or call his office at 202-225-4031 or fax his office at 202-225-0563
A complete copy of the proposed legislation can be viewed on the web at:
Frequency Fan Club P. O. Box 610 Milledgeville, GA 31061
(space for the ad in Winston Cup Scene is) provided by the Frequency Fan Club, who is deeply concerned about our rights to monitor race teams and other public services with scanners.
"ON THE INTERNET" http://www.racescanners.com ===== End of quoted ad. ===== Mike's comments:
I don't know anything about Frequency Fan Club personally. This is not meant to serve as an endorsement of FFC by NASCARFans, nor was there any financial arrangement made by FFC to put the ad in this NASCARFans e-mail post. (I hate this legal mumbo-jumbo sometimes).
I merely pass the quoted ad from WCS on to you readers so you can research the facts, and make your own decisions.
My personal opinion? Glad you asked.....<grin> Do what they ask you to do. Call and write your senators and reps to vote agains H.R. 2369.
