Skip Barber trained racers made up the 1-2-3 finish order at the NASCAR Winston Cup Checker Auto Parts/Dura Lube 500 held at Phoenix International Raceway. The troika of Jeff Burton, Jeremy Mayfield and Steve Park led the field to the checkered flag in a race that saw Burton record his second victory in two days on the 1-mile oval. Leading a total of 106 trips in the 312-lap race, Burton was firmly in control, holding the point over the last 60 circuits. Second place finisher Mayfield had a strong race after starting from the 25th spot. After Park in third, the balance of Skip Barber trained racers in the Top-10 included Winston Cup points leader Bobby Labonte, quick enough for fifth place and former Winston Cup champion Jeff Gordon, who followed in seventh. With his fifth place result and the points payout, Labonte moves one step closer to clinching the championship.

In Saturday's Busch Series action, Burton won his first race of the weekend by securing the lead for the second time on lap 145 of the Outback Steakhouse 200. The Virginian lead the last 56 laps to win his fourth NASCAR Busch Series event of the year. Fellow Skip Barber alumnus Jason Leffler was next-best in order, finishing the 200-lap race in second place.
