FORT WORTH-DALLAS (March 20, 2000) – Texas Motor Speedway is fast becoming a favorite track for many NASCAR Winston Cup drivers. That is especially true for several rookies on the circuit who have found success at Texas in other series. Dale Earnhardt, Jr., who won the NASCAR Busch Grand National Division Series championship the past two years, is now one of the top Winston Cup Rookie of the Year contenders. If past experience at Texas Motor Speedway is any indication, watch for the #8 Budweiser Chevrolet to be challenging for the win at the DIRECTV 500 on April 2. Earnhardt won his first Busch Series race in Texas in 1998 after starting that race 16th in the field. Last year, Little E was tenth. Stacy Compton, driver of the #9 Kodiak Ford, is jumping from the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series to Winston Cup this year. He has two top 10 finishes in three truck appearances at Texas. Last year, Compton posted a ninth and 12th place finish in the truck races at Texas Motor Speedway, and the Hurt, Va., native was fifth in the truck race in 1998 after starting 28th in that event. Matt Kenseth, driving the #17 DeWalt Tools Ford, is another first year Winston Cup driver battling for top first year driver honors. He qualified fifth in the Busch race in Texas last year before finishing 18th. In 1998, Kenseth was eighth after starting the Texas race 24th. This year's top rookie so far in Winston Cup points is Dave Blaney in the #93 Amoco Pontiac. He started on the pole for the Texas Busch race last year and finished eighth in the field. This year's crop of Winston Cup rookies is no stranger to Texas Motor Speedway, and they are hoping to reach back for some Texas luck come April 2.
