Marlin Scores Runner-Up Finish At "The Rock"

ROCKINGHAM, N.C. (February 24, 2002) -- The Coors Light Dodge Intrepid R/T driven by Sterling Marlin finished second in the Subway 400 at North Carolina Speedway. Marlin is currently first in Winston Cup championship points.

The Coors Light Dodge started the event in sixth place and quickly moved up to fourth position by lap 11. Marlin kept the car in the top 5 for the majority of the race. The Coors Light Dodge first took the lead on lap 106, gaining five bonus points, and was seen up front often during the 393-lap event.

After battling up front all day, Marlin again became the leader of the race on lap 376 and looked to be the eventual race winner. On lap 389, a caution came out for debris (oil) on the track. Marlin got in some of the oil and was passed by Matt Kenseth before making it back to the yellow flag. The race ended under caution with Matt Kenseth as the winner and Marlin in second.

"I want to congratulate Matt Kenseth on a great race," Marlin said. "We had a good car, too, but we just got in some oil down there in turns three and four and I almost wrecked with four or five to go. Matt got by us, but we had a good car on long runs and that’s what we were counting on. We didn’t need those short cautions there at the end. With 50 to go I guess we were clicking off two tenths a lap off on Matt, and then sure enough here comes another caution.

"We led the most laps last week, and we led some today. All the guys have done a great job, and we’ve had some good race cars. We ran real good at Las Vegas last year. We had a chance to win it, and we’re taking a good car out there."

Next on the schedule for the No. 40 Coors Light team is the UAW-DaimlerChrysler 400 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway on March 3, 2002.
