ROUSH RACING QUOTES Dura-Lube/Kmart 400 First-round qualifying February 25, 2000
First-round qualifying at The Rock began shortly after 2:30 p.m. EST, and all seven Roush Racing drivers circled the 1.017-mile oval in Rockingham, N.C., with two cars locking into the top 25, guaranteed of a starting spot in Sunday's race. Chad Little was the third of 47 entries to qualify, Jeff Burton 13th, Matt Kenseth 26th, Mark Martin 32nd and Kevin Lepage was the 34th competitor to make his one lap of qualifying.
Matt Kenseth, No. 17 DEWALT Tools Ford Taurus (6th quickest, 23.37 seconds): "We're really happy with sixth place. That's a little better than we practiced and that allows us to begin working on the car for the race. This DEWALT EMAZING team has done a great job with this car."
Jeff Burton, No. 99 Exide Batteries Ford Taurus (16th quickest, 23.504 seconds): "I felt like I got all I could get out of the car. I asked for some changes to be made and the Exide crew made them. The car didn't do what I thought it would, but I got what I asked for. The Northern Light Busch car is also here this weekend, and hopefully with the extra track time we can put together two strong races."
Kevin Lepage, No. 16 Northern Light Ford Taurus (28th quickest, 23.619 seconds): "We were a little looser getting into Turns 1 and 3 than we wanted to be. We've got a little work to do on the Northern Light Taurus, but Pat (Tryson) and I have some ideas, and we're going to work on it tomorrow."
Chad Little, No. 97 John Deere Ford Taurus (36th quickest, 23.714 seconds): "The John Deere Ford was a little loose going into Turn 3, and it got away from me. We still turned in a time right around where we practiced this morning, but we'll have to wait and see where that plays out in the final standings. We've got a good car this weekend and we'll work tomorrow on long runs and finding the right combination to save our tires for the race on Sunday."
Mark Martin, No. 6 Valvoline/Cummins Ford Taurus (44th quickest, 23.805 seconds): "Well, we accomplished our goal on the Busch side by winning the pole, but Winston Cup qualifying came up short for us. I overdrove the Valvoline/Cummins Taurus and hit the wall. I had a heck of a lap going and should have slowed down a little, I guess. We won't have to use the backup car, but the guys have some work ahead of them to fix the damage on the right side. Hopefully, it's just sheet metal, but it worked for Dale Jarrett last week. He hit the wall in practice and still won the Daytona 500. Maybe we can do the same this week."
