Spencer Gets Top-20 At "The Rock"
ROCKINGHAM, N.C. (February 24, 2002)– The Target Dodge Intrepid R/T driven by Jimmy Spencer finished 20th in the Subway 400 at North Carolina Speedway. Spencer is currently 40th in Winston Cup championship points.
The Target Dodge started in 12th position for the 393-lap event. On lap 12, the car lost its primary ignition box and fell back to 20th place while Spencer switched to the alternate ignition box.
Following the drop to 20th, the Target Dodge became very loose on the track and hard to handle in turns one and three. Team Target worked the majority of the day on the car to tighten it up for Spencer.
During the last 30 laps of the Subway 400, Spencer piloted the Target Dodge to lap times as fast as the leaders. The team took the checkered flag in 20th place, one lap down.
"The ignition box went out early," Spencer said. "We were running 10th and that dropped us to 20th. Then we battled loose. If the ignition box hadn’t gone out, we might have been able to stay on the lead lap. We finished 20th and I think the car might have been better than that. We’ll just have to try again next week at Vegas. We had a good test out there, so we’ll see what happens."
Next on the schedule for the No. 41 Target team is the UAW-DaimlerChrysler 400 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway on March 3, 2002.
