"We'd been loose all day. That's the best the car has drove the whole time. We've still got a little way to go to get the car ready for the race, but it was a pretty good run for the Coors Light Dodge. I've never qualified good here, but we'll race good. I like this track a lot. You can run up against the wall, in the middle and on the bottom. It's a pretty challenging track. It gets real loose, slick, that's why I like it. We did all we could do and raced as hard as we could at Daytona. If we had finished the race under yellow, we would have won the race. That's the way I think it should have finished, but I don't make the decisions."
BILL ELLIOTT (No. 9 Dodge Dealers Intrepid R/T)
"We ran exactly what we ran in practice. The car feels pretty good, but we didn't pick it up and you've got to do that in qualifying. You're supposed to get quicker."
CASEY ATWOOD (No. 7 Sirius Satellite Radio Dodge Intrepid R/T)
"We were a little bit faster in practice today. I guess the track just cooled off a little bit. We were a little bit tight qualifying. I thought it was going to be a little bit better lap than that, but I could feel the tires slipping. That's where our problem was. Hopefully we can get that better in Happy Hour and have a good race."
KYLE PETTY (No. 45 Sprint Dodge Intrepid R/T)
"We were good in practice. The Mike Ege Racing Engine and my guys worked real hard. John came down here and had a good test. Even though he struggled, we used stuff from his test. When you're 42nd in points and you're second fastest in practice, you don't have a lot to go on. If you mess up, you go home. All we needed to do is get a lap. It got a little cooler and the race track got a little tighter. My car drove a little tighter when we qualified and that knocked some of the speed out of it. I still get to race here. I didn't race here last year."
JIMMY SPENCER (No. 41 Target Dodge Intrepid R/T)
"We can't do stuff here that we wanted to do. We've got to wait until we get established in points. That hurt us. The guys did a good job. We tested down here and qualified good, and I think the car is going to be really good in the race. That was a good lap. We were a little too free, but I'd rather be free than pushing here. If you push you're not going to get a very good lap."
WARD BURTON (No. 22 Caterpillar Dodge Intrepid R/T)
"We improved on it. Actually it felt faster than it went. When we first started out it was real tight entering the corner. That lap was really good on the entry. It was a little too loose right before the throttle and right on the throttle, but that's OK. We don't normally set the record qualifying, but we'll run good come Sunday."
BUCKSHOT JONES (No. 44 Georgia Pacific Dodge Intrepid R/T)
"We unloaded and the car was real good. We just didn't pick up the speed like we needed to. Kyle helped us out a lot right there. We did some stuff to loosen our car up. Kyle came back and told us how the track had changed, so we did some changes right before we went out to qualify, so he helped us out a good bit there."
HUT STRICKLIN (No. 23 Hills Bros Coffee Dodge Intrepid R/T)
"I've tried changing my line dramatically. We've changed a gob of stuff on this car. We've got some things a little different than I'm accustomed to on the brakes and stuff. They're going to be good if I can adjust to it. It's just a little different feel with the brakes. If I can get a race in on 'em and learn it, we're going to be better on the long haul. It's just kind of a learning deal right now. My car is just about identical to Ward's, but Ward is accustomed to it. I'll get that way. It's kind of hard to adjust, but I'll adjust. We've got good cars and good people. I need to adjust so I can tell them what we need."
JEREMY MAYFIELD (No. 19 Dodge Dealers Intrepid R/T)
"We got real tight, and I think the track changed a little bit, too. It seemed like we were good this morning and from that point on the track got worse. We never ran that again. We ran our fast lap the first lap out this morning, and from then on, we weren't that good. We'll have to get it figured out."
