Robby Gordon qualified 11th Friday in his CD-2/Menards Ford Taurus at the 1.96-mile Sears Point road course in Sonoma, California. Gordon averaged 98.148mph around the 11-turn track north of San Francisco and will start aside Jimmy Spencer on row six for Sunday's race.
ROBBY GORDON "Really wanted to start in the top-ten and we almost made it there. I'll take 11th though, it'll give us a shot to be far enough up in the field at the start that we can watch the race develop and be a part of that without having to push too hard just to get to the front. We should have a good race car. In qualifying I think I left a little out there, especially in the beginning of the lap going up the hill. I was too conservative there. I also got a little bit sideways coming out of the hairpin. That's such an important corner back there, if you miss it at all you're toast. But if you hit it just right it can make up for something you might have botched earlier. How about Rusty though? He went out before us and I couldn't believe that time, that's smokin'! My hat's off to him - nobody was going to touch that.
"As for driving at this track - I love it. I know I come from road racing, but it's great to come up here, pound through 11 turns, race up hills and down hills and throw the car around. It's a lot of fun, maybe you'll see more of this type of racing in the future with NASCAR. If you look at how well guys like Rusty, Labonte, Jeff Gordon- and the list keeps going; it's just as competitive here as it is anywhere else on this circuit. And I think they're having fun running here and at Watkins. Now if we could ever get a race in Cleveland... Okay, I'll stop there! And don't get me wrong either - I don't want any quotes about me not liking the ovals because I do, I just think a good mix is healthy."
