DAYTONA BEACH, Fla., (Aug. 12, 2002) -- Ricky Rudd knows he'll have a starting spot in the 2003 Budweiser Shootout At Daytona. But one thing he doesn't know is what car he'll be driving in the 70-lap All-Star event that kicks off the new season.
Rudd, who has yet to finalize his Winston Cup plans for 2003, earned a spot in the Budweiser Shootout by winning the Bud Pole Award in last weekend's Sirius Satellite Radio at The Glen at Watkins Glen International.
"I'm always happy to be included in the Budweiser Shootout in Daytona," said Rudd, who has 13 previous Budweiser Shootout appearances. "I enjoy the race. It's how we kick off our season every year. It just gives us some extra time on that track that hopefully will help us in the Daytona 500."
Rudd, whose best finish in the Budweiser Shootout was a fifth in 1993, drove the No. 28 Havoline Ford around the 2.45-mile road course at Watkins Glen International on Friday in 71.885 seconds, 122.696 mph to win his 28th career Bud Pole and his first since June 2001 at Pocono.
Rudd becomes the 17th driver to date to be eligible for the 2003 Budweiser Shootout. The record for most drivers in the Budweiser Shootout is 22, set in last year's race.
