Ryan Newman in the no. 12 Alltel Ford was the highest qualifying Raybestos® Rookie for the Pontiac Excitement 400. He will start 11th in Saturday night's race.
"We lost a little over two tenths (of a second) from when we practiced. It's kind of hard to say. The track's definitely different but I don't know if we adapted better than everybody else or not. We'll have to see. I don't think it's as much as the track slowed down as it was the tries just don't refire real well. We've given everything a chance to cool down. The sun's not out and the track is not quite as hot. I just couldn't get real good grip. I talked to Sterling (Marlin) afterwards and he was the same way. I was a little tight and he was a little loose."
YOU SLOWED DOWN FROM PRACTICE. WHY?
"We just couldn't get the grip that we needed. I think it's going to be the same for everybody. I think the weather is going to be about the same; the sun is behind the clouds. Hopefully, that lap will be pretty good for maybe a top-10 run. A lot of other guys are really strong."
HOW WAS THE SEALER?
"It was awesome this morning. It was, like, ungodly amounts of grip. It's the same for everybody."
Jimmie Johnson, No. 48 Lowe's Chevrolet, qualified 26th.
"The times are a little bit off from practice. I'm not sure exactly why. I guess we will find out. One of the bad things about going so early is that you set the mark and you don't know if it's good or bad and you have to sit around and wait. The guys did an awesome job with this Lowe's Monte Carlo. We were in the top-10 in practice and hope to end up there."
YOU DIDN'T PICK UP A LOT ON THE SECOND LAP. WHY?
"I don't know. I think the track has changed a lot with the sealer on it, from the Busch cars having their 'Happy Hour' so I'm not exactly sure why. It's one of those things when you go early you sit around guessing things for a long time wondering what caused what or why, if you are fast or slow either way. Right now we are considerably slower than we were in practice and we'll just have to see what happens.
