Waltrip Gains On Top-20 With Top-10 Finish at Richmond

Richmond, Virginia (May 15) - The media hype around NASCAR driver Michael Waltrip always seems to be focused on the superspeedways of Daytona and Talladega, but Waltrip's top finishes of the 2004 season have come at two of the smallest tracks on the circuit.

Saturday night at Richmond International Raceway the NAPA AUTO PARTS Chevrolet was first in line for 55 laps and proved to be one of the fastest cars of the evening until the final run when his car became tight. Waltrip managed to hold on to a 10th-place finish, tying his season best with another top-10 at Bristol Motor Speedway.

"We led the race for a while tonight," said Waltrip, "but our car wound up tight and started pushing up the race track and we lost some spots. We didn't go to Richmond to finish 10th, but a top-10 in a NEXTEL Cup race isn't bad as stout as the competition level is. I am proud of the performance of the car and of the team on pit road."

Waltrip remains 30th in the NEXTEL championship standings, trailing the top-20 by just 105 points.

"I am disappointed in our finish," explained Waltrip, "because I feel like we were better than that. But in respect to the top-20 and the top-10, it was a good point's day for us. We gained a lot of ground and that is what we have to do every single weekend."

Dale Earnhardt Inc. teammate Dale Earnhardt Jr. took NAPA to victory lane by winning the 400-lap race beating out Jimmie Johnson and Bobby Labonte for the top spot. Tony Stewart and Matt Kenseth finished fourth and fifth respectively.

The NAPA team will compete on Saturday night in Harrisburg, N.C., in the NEXTEL ALL-STAR race. Waltrip won this event in 1996 and finished fifth last year. The ALL-STAR event will be broadcast by FX and PRN Radio at 7:00pm (ET).
