Chevrolet and Hendrick Motorsports Press Conference at Richmond
Select Quotes Included for Rick Hendrick, Dale Earnhardt, Jr., Jeff Gordon, Jimmie Johnson and Casey Mears
Today Ed Peper, general manager of Chevrolet, and Brent Dewar, GM North America vice president of sales, service and parts, along with Rick Hendrick, Hendrick motorsports chairman and CEO, announced that Chevrolet will continue its partnership with Hendrick Motorsports for 2008 and beyond. The following is select quotes from participants of the press conference including comments from Hendrick, Dale Earnhardt, Jr., Jeff Gordon, Jimmie Johnson and Casey Mears.
Rick Hendrick, Hendrick motorsports chairman and CEO
"I think it's really appropriate that we're doing it here in Richmond. I grew up about 60 miles from here and my first car my dad and I built was a 1931 Chevrolet that I bought from a service station about 20 miles from here. It's really special that we're announcing this here today. Thirty-one years ago, boy I'm telling my age today, I got my first dealership which was a Chevrolet dealership and that's all I've ever raced in all the championships we've been fortunate enough to win - it's all been in Chevys. I'm not sure if it wasn't for you guys at Chevrolet, I wouldn't be in the automobile business or the racing business. I'd probably still be running Richmond on dirt with a volunteer crew with my dad.
"It's a special day for us. We appreciate the support. All the years that we've been in racing Chevrolet has always given us the tools and the engineering to remain up front and we're partners on and off the track and I'm looking forward to many, many more years of both racing and selling Chevrolets so this is a special day for all of us. And again, we welcome Dale (Earnhardt, Jr.). This is the first time we've had a chance to have him with us all together in one of these so we hope we're sitting here Saturday night late."
Casey Mears, No. 25 National Guard/GMAC Impala SS
"I'm really excited, first of all to be a part of Hendrick Motorsports, and then obviously coming back with Chevrolet next year and for the future. I'm every excited about it. Growing up and racing, my uncle's had several wins in Chevrolets and over the years and I've always associated Chevrolet with winning races and the performance based company. To sign with Hendrick Motorsports and be a part of the whole of Chevrolet family starting this season has been a lot of fun and a dream come true to be a part of this whole organization and a part of the Chevrolet group. I'm looking forward to carrying on some wins the rest of the season and looking forward to a strong '08."
Jimmie Johnson, No. 48 Lowe's Impala SS
"All I've ever raced is a Chevrolet. Since I started racing professionally at 16 I've been in a Chevrolet so I guess it's been almost 16 years now that I've raced professionally and only in Chevrolet. It's a huge honor for me and Chevrolet has been a big part of my career and helping me come from the off-road ranks racing around in the desert, meeting people like Stan and Randy Herzog, meeting Rick Hendrick, and helping me get through the ranks of racing to where I am today. So I'm every happy to be continuing the relationship with Chevrolet and thankful for all that they've done for me on the track, off the track, networking, it's just been a great relationship and I'm happy to continue it."
Jeff Gordon, No. 24 DuPont Impala SS
"I think the racing heritage and the success that Chevrolet's had speaks for itself. I don't think that there's a lot more to add other than I think that we're definitely with the right group. For the last 15 seasons I've been with Chevrolet and I think that there's a lot that comes with being involved with Chevrolet. I think they give you all the tools from the use of engineering and wind tunnels and people and personnel and the right tools under the hood as well. They work very closely with the teams and I know this is a great move for us to stay with them and continue on the success that we've had at Hendrick Motorsports and hopefully continue to have the success with Chevrolet as well.
"And I'm also a dealer so I'm very appreciative (of Chevrolet) - me and Jimmie. We both have dealerships so we're very proud of that as well. Keep selling those Chevrolets!"
Dale Earnhardt, Jr., No. 8 Budweiser Impala SS
"I have amassed a small collection of cars at the house and I was more relieved about this announcement than anything (laughs) because I don't want to start collecting anything else. As a driver there are certain people and certain partners that stick out in your mind as huge supporters and people that have supported you through your career and Chevrolet is one of those and I'm really, really excited to be able to keep that partnership going. Their belief in me as a driver gives me a lot of confidence and I'm glad that I'll still be in Chevrolets for many more years."
