Richmond: Ford drivers race quotes

ELLIOTT SADLER - No. 38 M&M's Taurus (finished 37th) "I'm fine, the car didn't take too bad of a hit, but we got to straighten out the rear clip so we can the M&M's Ford Taurus back out there. I think John Andretti just lost control and run into...

ELLIOTT SADLER - No. 38 M&M's Taurus (finished 37th)

"I'm fine, the car didn't take too bad of a hit, but we got to straighten out the rear clip so we can the M&M's Ford Taurus back out there. I think John Andretti just lost control and run into the back of us. It's a shame, we were just trying to points race tonight, didn't have a car good enough to win. But we were just trying to points race, just got run into. There's nothing we could do about it, so we'll try to fix it and get all the points we can."

YOU WERE MOVING FORWARD. "Yeah, we started 39th and we were like 15th or 16th and had decent car, I mean, something we could work with on the long runs, and we just got run into. It's a shame. We'll try to points race, but it just wasn't meant to be."

RICKY RUDD - No. 21 Motorcraft Taurus (finished 34th)

"I think someone got in the back end of me, I'm not really sure. We were trying to hold everybody off. It's pretty slippery out there when you get a re-start, drive a few laps, get a caution, you re-start again. So, I'm not really sure. Somebody got in the back of me. It's just unfortunate. The Motorcraft/Air Force Ford was running good tonight, we were going to come out of it with a good top 10, but it wasn't meant to be, I guess."

JEFF BURTON - No. 99 Citgo Taurus (finished 9th)

"It's just so competitive. I mean, it's just amazing how competitive everybody is, and there were times I thought we had a chance to win, there were times I thought we had a 10th-place car. It was a strange night, had a little trouble, took off good, then the second run we weren't that good, and then the third run we really went fast, and then the last run was really our worst run, unfortunately. A bunch of guys got by me and I went back and got by some of 'em that got by me. All in all, I've been telling everybody that this team is building and we're coming, and, you know, we ran a top-five most of the night tonight, we didn't ended up as good as we ran, but we ran top-five all night. Same thing as last week, we ran top-six all day and had our problem in the pits. We're building and we're getting stronger and I wish it were here right now, but we still have a little growing to do. When we do get there we're going to be real strong, and I'm excited about that."

THERE WERE A RECORD NUMBER OF CAUTIONS. ANYTHING CLOSE FOR YOU? "I had three really close calls. You know, I'm a little disappointed with ninth, but at the same time I probably ought to be happy that we finished ninth. There were several times that we could have been in some big wrecks and we missed them. So, we're fortunate, but a little disappointed. But, at the same time, like I said, we're running better, and this team is building."

THE 99 TEAM AND ALL OF ROUSH RACING DID WELL TONIGHT. "Yeah, it's funny. We were ran of all those guys all night and we finished behind all of 'em. We didn't get the finish we thought we might've deserved, but that's okay. Like I say, we're a young team and we're getting stronger every week."

KURT BUSCH - No. 97 Rubbermaid Taurus (finished 8th)

"It was just a long day for the Rubbermaid Commercial car. It seemed like we were fast early on in the day, and pit stops slowed us up a little bit, so we had to keep coming back to the front. It was like somebody hit the switch. I just lost all forward bite, and we couldn't pass any more cars."

WERE YOU CLOSE TO GETTING CAUGHT UP IN ANY OF THE NUMEROUS CAUTIONS? "Yeah, all the time. This race track's terrible, the way this sealant is. If you get out of the groove just a little bit, it'll bite you."

CAN YOU COMMENT ON THE PERFORMANCE OF ALL OF ROUSH RACING'S TEAMS TONIGHT? "We survived, anyway. We had a competitive car early, and then I don't know what happened at the end of the day. Our forward bite just shut off and we were falling."

MARK MARTIN - No. 6 Viagra Taurus (finished 5th)

"We had a really, really good car, but we had a lot of problems. We had to go to the back. We started in the back, and then we had a bearing seize up in the firewall, we had to fix that - lucky that we got that fixed. It was a great effort by the team. And then we had a flat tire, and dropped us all the way to the end of the line. So, the last pit stop we only took two tires to get some track position. You know, that handicapped us a little bit. We had such a great race car we could stay right with them there. It was good run."

WERE YOU CLOSE TO ANY OF THE WRECKS? "All of them were close, it seemed like."

GREG BIFFLE - No. 16 Grainger Taurus (finished 17th)

THE FIRST HALF OF THE RACE WAS STRONG FOR YOU. "Yeah, it really was. You know, I just got in the corner a little hard down there in three and four, the car was just a little bit free - not really - but I just got in the corner hot and got up out of the groove and kind of smacked the wall and we had to make some extra pit stops. Got in the back where there's beating and banging, and there we were the rest of the night, just beating and banging. You know, I feel really, really bad. I got in the back of Dale Jarrett down the backstretch, and I don't know exactly what happened there, but he got out of the throttle like just in a millisecond and I drove clear into his fuel cell. I just don't know. We were the only two on that straightaway, as far as I knew, and then they were telling me that the 42 car was broke with a motor up in front of him. I don't why the 88 didn't see that and maybe was able to go around him, but I drove right square in the back of him. And, I was really paying attention. I feel bad for him. I feel bad for the team. We weren't even racing, that's just trying to avoid somebody else that's just in the way, and it's unfortunate."

THERE IS A WEEK OFF NOW. A COUPLE OF DAYS FROM NOW, WILL YOU PUT THIS RACE IN THE POSITIVE COLUMN? "Oh, yeah. This is definitely a positive race for us - right now it's a positive race, because we ran competitive tonight. We could've run in the top five - I promise you we were going to be in the top five. I just got in that corner a little bit hot, I think. Maybe it was being too cautious and kind of steered it up into that loose stuff. Instead of letting the car get a little bit loose and then trying to hang onto it, I just was kind of too cautious. It rolls up in the stuff going forward instead of cutting the wheel and maybe spinning out. It was a positive run for us. We're headed in the right direction with our race cars and our team, and that's what we want to do."
